SAGE is the country's largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources to LGBT older adults and their caregivers, advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBT older people, provides education and technical assistance for aging providers and LGBT organizations through its National Resource Center on LGBT Aging, and cultural competence training through SAGECare. With staff in New York City, Washington, D.C., Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, and other key cities across the country, SAGE coordinates a growing network of 28 SAGE affiliates in 21 states and the District of Columbia.
Summary: Under the direction of the Chief Officer for External Affairs, the Managing Director of Development possesses the acumen to work effectively and proactively in a dynamic, fast-paced organization. The Managing Director of Development must also possess outstanding interpersonal skills as this is a forward facing role.
The Managing Director of Development plans, directs, coordinates and participates in ongoing individual, foundation and corporate fundraising campaigns, as well as provides leadership and engages in the identification, analysis, solicitation and cultivation of potential individual, foundation and corporate prospects and donors.
Responsibilities
• In close collaboration with the Chief Officer for External Affairs, ensure that the organization meets and exceeds its annual financial goals for all revenue streams, which include major gifts, individual giving, special events, foundations, corporate support, planned giving, and government funding;
• In partnership with members of the Development staff, execute fundraising activities to meet and exceed financial goals, review progress against targets and benchmarks, develop reporting mechanisms to ensure progress toward objectives;
• Develop and execute SAGE’s overall annual fundraising plan;
• Manage, mentor, coordinate, and evaluate the development team, with direct supervision of the Director of Individual Giving & Special Events, Director of Institutional Partnerships, Director of Legacy Planning and Major Gifts Officer;
• Directly identify, cultivate and solicit a portfolio of current and prospective major donor and corporate supporters, working with the Chief Officer for External Affairs, and other members of the executive leadership team as appropriate;
• Research public and private grant agencies, foundations and corporations to identify potential sources of funding for SAGE’s programs and initiatives;
• Oversee, edit and proofread proposals, direct mail, email blasts and reports and ensure they are sent within deadlines;
• Work closely with program staff to identify potential funding for current programmatic initiatives and new programs that further SAGE’s strategic plan and to ensure timely and accurate reporting;
• Attend community meetings, networking and special events.
• Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
• Minimum 10 years of experience in development that includes major donors, foundation and corporations, government, special events and planned giving.
• Ability to forecast and track revenue;
• Deep experience in identifying and researching prospective major, corporate and foundation donors.
• Demonstrated ability to manage many competing deadlines.
• Excellent writing and proofreading skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Prior foundation, major donor and planned giving experience required
• Ability to clearly communicate with donors and vendors.
• Strong leadership, motivational, management, and communications skills
• An established record as a team builder and mentor.
• Ability to plan, launch and manage complex fundraising campaigns and project plans.
• Ability to prospect, solicit, and steward donors.
• Strong sense of humor.
• Deep understanding of and demonstrated commitment to LGBT issues.
• Passion for SAGE’s mission.
• Demonstrated commitment to SAGE’s values of diversity, equity and inclusion.
• Computer Skills: Proficiency in all programs of the current Microsoft Office Suite, and major component parts of Raiser's Edge and Salesforce fundraising databases.
Location: SAGE Center Midtown
