Director, Music Group Acquisitions
A great opportunity to join an energetic team in the Sony Pictures Music Group Business Affairs Department as Senior Manager or Director, Acquisitions.
As part of the Music Group Acquisitions team, the Senior Manager or Director’s role includes working collaboratively with and supporting all Sony Pictures Entertainment divisions surrounding the acquisition and management of music rights in films produced by outside production companies.
Responsibilities:
• Provide music related legal counsel to SPE divisions, regarding acquisition of music rights and ownership
• Proactively track ownership of original music for all SPE divisions’ acquisition titles
• Analyze distribution agreements regarding music related terms
• Analyze composer agreements for essential terms on titles in which SPE acquires ownership of music rights
• Negotiate and draft amendments to music related agreements
• Negotiate and draft administration agreements with composers and/or licensors
• Directly correspond with outside production companies and manage delivery of music related elements
• Analyze all third-party music licenses for studio release acquisitions; negotiate essential terms when necessary, track all licenses and proof of payments
• Work with Music Group BA attorneys and Content Development team regarding soundtrack album rights and terms
• Prepare Music Rights Brief for acquisitions in which SPE owns or administers music rights
• Conduct music cue sheet compliance screenings
• Analysis and presentation of music publishing rights to SPE Music Group Copyright team
• Manage proprietary database in relation to acquisition documents
• Oversee and mitigate outstanding publishing issues with outside production companies
• Conduct post mortems for acquisitions in which SPE owns or administers Music Rights
• Troubleshoot various music related issues on all acquisitions, such as negotiating specific essential terms, analyzing new use fee payment obligations and mechanical royalties’ issues, as well as drafting of certain music related provisions, as needed
Requirements:
• Member in good standing of the California State Bar Association, minimum 3-5 years
• Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience at an entertainment law firm, production company, record label, music publisher, production music library, etc.
• Knowledge of production companies and music industry
• Solid understanding of music publishing, copyright splits, synchronization and master use rights, and public domain works
• Passion for music & film
• Positive attitude in challenging situations
• Collaborative, motivated, proactive, solution-oriented team-player
• Strong follow-through and thorough due diligence
• Ability to track all music related elements throughout delivery process, from initial acquisition through final production
• Extremely well-organized and detail-oriented
• Ability to process and navigate fast moving high amounts of data and paperwork
• Strong negotiating skills, works well under pressure, ability to accurately manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Keen business acumen and understanding of sensitive business relationships
• Ability to professionally and amicably communicate in all manners internally and with outside business partners, both written and verbal
• Savvy with technology, database management and asset requests/sharing
