Staff Writer, Transportation and Infrastructure - CQ Roll Call

CQ Roll Call seeks a staff writer with expertise in transportation and infrastructure to cover legislation and policy development, lobbying and politics related to the industry.
The Transportation and Infrastructure staff writer, based in Washington, D.C., will be responsible for covering hearings, bill markups, floor action and other events of interest as stakeholders advance their interests in Congress. The beat broadly includes coverage of airlines, automobiles, railroads, ports and shipping, and the infrastructure that supports them. The journalist would be required to look beyond the Beltway at trends in state policy, their outcomes and impact on stakeholders.
CQ offers the successful candidate a chance to write for our core website, newsletters and magazine, plus contribute to Roll Call, record podcasts, appear as an expert at events and with outside media, and participate in the newsroom's growth initiatives.
Accountabilities
In the role you would be expected to:
• Track and understand legislation, including appropriations bills that allocate funding to the Department of Transportation and other relevant agencies
• Generate story ideas and analysis for a sophisticated audience that includes government, corporations, associations and trade groups
• Develop sources on and off Capitol Hill, including in trade groups and lobbying shops
Experience, skills and professional attributes
To succeed in the role you must have:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
• Attention to detail, industry knowledge and the ability to create and interpret data for trend stories are a must
• At least five years of experience covering Congress or transportation and infrastructure, and demonstrate an ability to mine legislation, lobbying and campaign spending reports, and regulatory filings for incisive stories that connect the dots
• Strong writing and reporting skills; sources in the industry, K Street and federal agencies; and experience in breaking stories.
• Applicants should be able to write clearly and quickly
• Applicants should be able to write spot news as well as features and longer-form analysis, including data-driven stories; amplify their work on social media, and demonstrate an ability to raise the newsroom’s profile and reach
To succeed in the role you will be able to demonstrate:
• A collaborative work style and the ability to be a team player with other CQ reporters and editors
• Flexibility and an ability to adapt to change as well as a high degree of accuracy and fairness, as well as correct grammar and spelling
• A strong work ethic and a willingness to adapt to changing news situations, including to work odd hours when news happens
• Ability to meet deadlines and ensure that copy is free of misspellings, style errors or mistakes
• Ability to work with editors to develop story ideas, schedule them and deliver them on time while keeping in close touch with editors about developments on news beat
