Requirements
Position Description:
The Editorial Intern will assist with the day-to-day operations of a small publishing imprint, Metropolitan Books, working primarily on nonfiction titles, but also literary fiction, graphic novels, and works in translation. Duties will include standard administrative work such as mailings, filing, and processing invoices. In addition, the Intern will learn about the book production process and provide assistance as needed, including logging, reading, and evaluating book proposals; writing reader’s reports; drafting letters in response to submissions; liaising with other departments; formatting manuscripts; proofreading; and drafting descriptive copy. Most importantly, applicants should have a deep interest and passion for literature and be actively engaged with current events. Please include a resume and cover letter.
About Metropolitan Books:
Metropolitan Books is an imprint of Henry Holt and Company that publishes a select list of 15-20 books per year. The Metropolitan list includes politics, current events, history, memoir, social science, cultural criticism, graphic novels, and literary fiction. Major Responsibilities:
• Assist editors with office functions, including logging and responding to submissions, tracking contracts, and routing all manuscripts through the production process.
• Serve as liaison to the other Henry Holt and Macmillan departments, providing material and information as needed.
• Write and prepare copy for covers, tip sheets, and catalog.
• General administrative support.
Required Skills / Knowledge:
• Excellent writing and verbal skills.
• Energetic and attentive office management.
• Actively engaged with current events.
• Multitasking, time-management, and other organizational skills a must.
• Able to communicate professionally and efficiently by email and phone.
• Fluency in another language is a plus, but not required.
Experience Needed:
• Administrative experience working in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience working closely with language, writing, and editing (e.g. school newspaper positions, internships with magazines, or similar).
• Previous internship in book publishing is a plus, but not required.
Educational Background Required:
• Bachelor’s degree.
