Job Description
Sterling Publishing Co., Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Barnes & Noble, is seeking a Children’s Designer to work within its Art/Design department. We are seeking a creative, innovative, and passionate, yet responsible risk taker who is looking to make an impact within the department as well as the organization. We require excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Essential Functions
• Handles the design and production of 10-15 titles per list including covers & interiors of established series, novelty titles and original book design.
• Works closely with the Art Director and Associate Art Director to maintain the highest quality of design and productions standards while keeping on track with deadlines.
• Attend weekly status and design meetings. Maintains ongoing communications and schedules with the Editorial and Production departments to ensure timely execution and follow through from manuscript to bound book for all projects.
• Works closely with all members of the Art Department to increase productivity, communication, collaboration, design creativity and quality.
• Handles general support of the Sterling Children’s Books Art Department, including but not limited to art logs, art returns and routing.
Qualifications
• 4 year college degree preferably in Graphic Design, or equivalent work experience.
• Minimum 3 years design experience, preferably in book publishing.
• A strong portfolio of original graphic design examples showing creative and appropriate use of typography with design ability ranging from traditional to contemporary to totally out-of-the box.
• Proficient in InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, with knowledge of applications in book design and production.
• Extensive knowledge of typography and book layout.
• Detailed knowledge of pre-press requirements for print.
• Experience in managing workflows and schedules.
• Knowledge of the manufacturing process and proofing.
• Strong time management skills and proven ability to multi-task.
• Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
