Birkhäuser New York is seeking to appoint an Assistant Editor to provide support for the Acquisitions Editor and other members of the Mathematics Editorial team by overseeing projects from proposal through publication and managing related administrative tasks. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written, as building and maintaining strong working relationships with authors, series editors, journal editors-in-chief, and other partners, both external and internal, is essential to this role.
Responsibilities
• Manage the peer review process for new book proposals and manuscripts
• Manage and coordinate book and journal projects – monitor progress and follow-up with authors to ensure timely submission of manuscripts
• Input and management of information in internal databases and systems
• Take the lead on assigned projects and liaise with the relevant stakeholders
• Assist authors with manuscript preparation as needed
• Prepare final manuscripts for handover to production
• As necessary, check for any necessary rights and permissions for third party content
• Liaise with colleagues in marketing, production, accounting, and editorial departments
• Contribute towards team/departmental projects
• Review and make suggestions to improve and streamline processes for the team
• Occasionally support his/her manager during editorial trips and exhibits
Experience, Skills, and Qualifications
Essential
• Educated to degree level (or equivalent)
• Excellent English language skills, both oral and written, with a sharp eye for detail
• Previous experience in an administrative role
• Numerate and computer-literate
• Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks simultaneously
• Excellent communication and team-working skills to deal with people at all levels, both internally and externally
• Resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries
• Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative
Desirable
• Previous experience in a publishing/editorial role
• Knowledge of the academic/scholarly publishing industry and/or a desire to learn more about it
• Background or interest in mathematics or other STEM subject
