JOB DESCRIPTION
The National Geographic Technology team is seeking a Cloud Infrastructure Director to operate our Content and Web/Front-end Platforms. At National Geographic, we heavily depend on various Content Platforms and reusable Web Tools that power several owned and operated, as well as vendor managed US and Global digital properties.
This person will manage the infrastructure strategy in conjunction with a Cloud Managed service team and a few key direct reports. Transitioning Cloud server-based applications to Cloud compute, improved operation wither cost reduction or performance, advising on budget, and executive level presentations are expected. Our web products include many tools, software languages, and other diversity which will be consider with building new Cloud based sites and require the candidate to show a good understanding of business needs and to experience managing Cloud infrastructure.
National Geographic is a security minded company and a person in this position is expected to work with and assist our Security team, manage the Cloud security aspects. Partnering with various product and engineering stakeholders, you will own and represent the priorities, backlog, and technology roadmap for National Geographic Cloud infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
• Own the Cloud Infrastructure priorities and backlog, working with various product managers, project managers and engineering leads. Act as the primary point of contact for the teams’ roadmap and delivery. Represent the team in cross-team and program level planning activities.
• Manage solutions and operation working with Product Managers, Solution Architects, Engineering Architects, Internal / External customers, Software Engineers, Automation Engineers and Testers. Ensure plans are consistent with Cloud best practices and inline with Cloud managed services.
• Provide management leadership and stewardship of the Cloud infrastructure focusing on developing a roadmap based on established priorities and strategic engineering goals aligned to various engineering groups such as Enterprise Architecture, Platform Engineering, Quality Assurance, Performance, Operations and Support, and Cloud managed service.
• Improve operation issues of the infrastructure through better use of monitoring, cloud coding and scripting best practices. Work with 3rd party managed Cloud services to ensure National Geographic is benefiting from such services. Work with team to create and maintain a post mortem culture.
Qualifications:
• Minimum 5 year’s experience in a manager role, engaging with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Minimum 5 year’s experience in development or management related to cloud Infrastructure for a large scale consumer web experience.
• Ability to convert business needs to actionable plans leading conversations between non-technical and technical folk.
• Strong understanding of software development and agile practices as related to work coordination, story writing, acceptance criteria, as well as dependency and deployment management.
• Good understanding of content management systems, web content presentation architectures.
• Deep understanding of cloud standards such as securing infrastructure, efficient operation of machines.
• Experience using and use of 3rd party SaaS cloud software.
• Amazon AWS cloud experience with on-premise experience.
• Conveys business and technical concepts in written form to technical and non-technical audiences – white papers, presentations, documentation etc.
• The ability to work on multiple concurrent projects is essential. Strong self-motivation and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Willingness to learn and desire to help drive the development team forward.
• Must be a team-oriented individual, energetic, result & delivery oriented, with a keen interest on quality and the ability to meet deadlines.
Nice to have:
• Experience with Drupal, and Adobe AEM/CQ or other content management systems.
• Media website experience.
• Continuous integration and deployments.
• Blue/Green or rolling deployment in the cloud.
• Cloud certificate training.
• Scrum/Agile certification.
