The Lansing State Journal, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a social-savvy journalist to join its team as a full-time morning digital reporter. The reporter will make morning public-safety calls, report breaking news and aggregate trending content of interest to Lansing readers. The reporter is also responsible for maximizing www.lsj.com’s peak audience times to drive increased pageviews and engaged time. In addition, this reporter will work with other content to increase engagement through social media, better headline writing, etc. The reporter must have digital and video skills and reporting experience.
The job responsibilities include:
• Creates storytelling that accurately informs, entertains and engages specific audiences and platforms through the use of metrics
• Aggregates trending content of local, statewide and national interest for www.lsj.com readers, and to a lesser extent our outstate Michigan websites.
• Quick-hit traffic drivers are key
• Quickly responds to breaking news on social media and our own platforms, including through stories and video
• Manages social media accounts for Lansing, Battle Creek and Livingston on the early-morning shifts
• Creates video to accompany stories
• Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned
• Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand
A successful candidate must demonstrate strong news judgment, be a strong collaborator who can work closely with reporters, editors, designers and newsroom leadership. The position may include night, weekend and holiday hours.
