Assoc Learning Architect/Science Editor G6-12
Purpose of the Role
Under direct supervision, the Associate Learning Architect (ALA) is responsible for ensuring that all components of 6-12 science educational materials meet market needs and are delivered on time and on budget. The responsibilities of this position require a supervised level of independent and collaborative work. The ALA applies process, content, and technical knowledge to assigned projects, may participate in project planning, and continues to increase personal knowledge of process, technical skills, and subject-area content.
Job Responsibilities
• Works cooperatively and effectively with other members of cross-functional teams.
• Supports team leads on assigned projects to design content for all learning products that meet specified learning and user requirements
• Selects and applies appropriate HMH standards, templates, and processes to assigned projects, including project user personas, text and language standards, authoring tools, acceptance criteria, and review documents
• Ensures HMH standards are consistently implemented
• Under direct supervision, edits manuscript according to project guidelines, project schedules, and divisional standards of quality and accuracy; may write or revise portions of manuscripts, scripts, and storyboards; proofreads copy and makes necessary corrections
• Under direct supervision, prepares art specifications and checks all stages of art and proof for assigned projects; participates in the creation and checking of content for tech products; effectively uses tech tools in the publishing process to facilitate development efficiency and enhance product quality
• Participates in project planning and makes suggestions that address customer needs; completes competitive and standards analyses, research, literature searches, and fact checking
• Develops bookmaps, writes photo specs, completes project tracking documents, and has ownership of other tools as needed
Required Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a natural science (physics, chemistry, Earth science, biology, etc)
• Excellent writing and proofreading skills, with attention to detail
• Strong conceptual skills, a critical eye for detail, and the ability to translate complex concepts into visual representations
• Self-motivation, ability to work with and communicate effectively with a variety of technical and creative individuals
• Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills
• Good decision-making and problem-solving skills
• Ability to meet deadlines regularly and to highlight risks at early stages
• Passionate about creating engaging and effective (fun!) learning products
• Ability to work in a team environment
• Strong computer skills, including MS Office products
Preferred Experience
• 2+ years of educational publishing experience
• 2+ year of editorial and/or learning design experience
• Teaching experience helpful
• Experience writing scripts for engaging time-based media such as animated cartoons, television documentaries, narrative-driven digital interactive games, etc.
