Description
The Technical Instructor in 3D Technology is a full-time, 40-week position within the Visual and Performing Art program at Bennington College. The Technical Instructor in 3D Technology provides support for a variety of Visual Art disciplines, including Architecture, Animation, Ceramics, Digital Art, Sculpture, and Printmaking. This support includes the general maintenance and scheduling of 3D equipment, provision of technical assistance to individual students, and leading class demonstrations as needed by the Visual Arts faculty. Normally the Technical Instructor in 3D Technology independently teaches at least one course (2 credit) in each semester.
The Technical Instructor in 3D Technology will often have an integral role in one or more visual arts courses using 3D technologies for the entirety of a semester, and may be asked to co-teach a course with a faculty person or offer a co-requisite technology course. In addition, the Technical Instructor in 3D Technology may propose technique-oriented courses in Visual Arts. Past courses have explored Rhino 3D as a design tool for artists, examined digital modelling and representation techniques for architects, and examined Maxwell Render as a visualization tool.
Skills Required
Minimum undergraduate education in architecture, design, or a related field
Highly proficient in 3d software such as Rhino 3D, Maya, AutoCad, SolidWorks and Adobe Creative Suite
Proficient in Maxwell Render, VRay, Arnold or other rendering package
Experience and proficiency working with laser cutting, CNC routing, 3D printing
Experience and proficiency in general fabrication and making
Body of work demonstrating technical skill and creative sensibility
Knowledge of photography, 3D animation creation, or coding is desirable
Strong communication skills -- teaching experience is desirable
Willingness and ability to work across a variety of creative disciplines
Experience working with a diverse body of creative faculty and students
Responsibilities
Manage and provide instruction in 3D digital technology and digital fabrication
Oversee equipment and facilities for 3D printing, CNC routing, and laser cutting
Create and manage systems of access and oversight for 3D resources
Teach up to two 7-week, 2-credit technical courses each term
Provide full-time support for up to two full-term faculty classes each term
Provide occasional support for assorted Visual Arts classes as requested by faculty
Provide project-specific support to faculty and students outside of classes
