At HMH, the Director of Market Research is the evangelist for the customer. This role is responsible for the market research strategy and directs and oversees the organization's market research policies, objectives, and initiatives. The position will be asking, listening and learning from customers, to understand which experiences are key with a variety of engagements at HMH.
The Director of Market Research reports to the VP of Market Intelligence and Research within the larger marketing organization and must be experienced in managing large volumes of research projects in parallel and can execute across the testing process – conception, execution, analysis, recommendations. The candidate will also lead and develop a team of direct reports.
The Director of Market Research will use customer feedback, industry research, competitive analysis and usability testing to define and prioritize what is most important. The Director of Market Research is responsible for the planning, execution, and reporting of all primary market research projects in collaboration with business stakeholders throughout the organization and will provide leadership, guidance and consultation directly to stakeholders and be responsible for ensuring data is readily available for measuring growth and other metrics across the organization.
This individual will work with Development teams, Engineers, Designers, Product Managers, Business Intelligence Analysts, Product Marketers and other stakeholders to validate feedback and formulate hypotheses for new areas of advancement. In addition, the Director of Market Research is responsible for the relationship and CX strategy and methodologies conducted at HMH LAB Schools, in-house research labs, partnerships with online platforms and offsite live user labs. The Director of Market Research will coordinate Journey Maps, A/B/n tests and multivariate tests, determine success metrics, and draw conclusions aimed at optimizing and improving solutions and engagements on behalf of the customer.
Primary Responsibilities
• Become an expert on the environment the solutions will be used, the use cases and outcomes that the customer desires to achieve.
• Grow basic understanding of company data organization to create well thought through project specs
• Inspire teams to revolutionize solutions and experiences.
• Drive change through passion backed by solid business metrics and drive growth and culture of market research team.
• Work with Designers, Product Managers, Engineers, and other UXAs to prioritize research opportunities in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
• Deep, continuous understanding of design trends/what’s working with customers
• Develop, Grow and Maintain Lab School(s) relationships and ensure execution of state-of-the-art research methodologies.

Education and Experience
• BA/BS degree in Anthropology, Human Factors, Psychology, or Market Research .M.S./M.A. or Ph.D. preferred
• 5+ years of work experience
• 3+ years of managing direct reports
• Experience in CRM strategy and metrics
• Experience working on both Agile/Scrum and Waterfall development projects
• Demonstrable success of driving positive change based on data
• Prior experience in translating user experience into tangible specifications
• Experience in defining specifications and ways to scientifically quantify the optimal outcomes
• Experience working with statistics and experimental design
Knowledge and Skills
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills
• Ability to effectively problem-solve and prioritize both individual and team tasks
• Ability to navigate obstacles and drive results within a complex and dynamic environment
Other Requirements
• User Experience Analyst Certification, preferred
Physical Requirements
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
