The Associated Press seeks an enterprising reporter/producer with a proven track record of developing, analyzing and reporting on public opinion research to work in its Washington bureau as a newsperson. Reporting to the Deputy Managing Editor for Operations, this newsperson will write poll questionnaires, analyze survey data, write stories and produce data visualizations on and about AP’s surveys, as well as assist AP reporters in finding, working with and understanding poll data. The successful candidate will be a comfortable working in multiple media formats and be able to generate ideas for public opinion research that will resonate in the U.S. and around the world. This newsperson must have a strong understanding of current best practices in public opinion research and be able to evaluate survey research critically. The successful candidate must have the ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
The successful candidate will:
• work with AP’s polling editor and a team of journalists, reporters and editors to deliver compelling coverage of public opinion research that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
• have a demonstrated history of successful public opinion reporting, with a record of compelling work in multiple media formats on deadline and the production of enterprise that is illuminating and entertaining.
• have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
• have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
• pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
Qualifications: This newsperson must have demonstrated excellence in polling and/or data journalism, with a record of producing timely and in-depth public opinion research that drive spot news and enterprise coverage. Applicants must be able to explain complex data in clear and compelling ways, in text and via data visualization, and do so swiftly and accurately on tight deadlines. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively as a member of a team and should have at least two years of full-time experience in survey research or as a data journalist at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
Other qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
• Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
• Advanced-level professional competency in analyzing data using statistical software, preferably in SPSS or R.
• Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on a complex, challenging story lines.
