BACKGROUND AND CURRENT OPPORTUNITY
The National Academy of Design (NAD) is a nearly 200-year old membership organization made up of more than 440 of today’s leading artists and architects. Since its founding, we have remained committed to a powerful mission: to promote art and architecture in America through exhibition and education. Today our Academy is undergoing an exciting and long overdue transformation. With strong programming, an energized board, a committed membership, and financial resources, the National Academy is poised to commence an exciting phase of development and growth.
The National Academy seeks a new Director of Development to serve on its senior leadership team and work with constituents across the organization to shepherd in this new era. This individual will bring a high level of energy, spirit of enthusiasm for development, strategic focus to the role, and serve as a trusted fundraising partner with the Executive Director. The Director of Development will recognize, prioritize, and capitalize on opportunities when they surface internally and externally, marshaling the organization’s resources—including board, staff, volunteers and other stakeholders—to achieve fundraising results and help bring the National Academy to its next chapter.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Provide hands-on leadership, strategic direction, management, and coordination of all NAD development and fundraising efforts, including significant internal and external relationship cultivation and management. The Director of Development will build trust and forge strong relationships that galvanize the institution.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
TO JUMPSTART A DEPARTMENT WITH CAPACITY FOR GROWTH
• Create and execute an annual development plan in conjunction with Executive Director that encompasses individual and foundation/corporate/government giving strategies and goals, individual board member commitments, assignment and tracking of responsibilities, and timelines/deadlines.
• Build a board Development Committee.
• Develop strategy and direction for maximizing board engagement in development, both as donors and organizational ambassadors.
• Build strong relationships and partnerships with external stakeholders, securing buy-in and support from diverse constituents.
TO STRATEGICALLY BUILD OUT INITIATIVES
• Develop new tools and strategies for generating resources (e.g., new approaches to cultivation; more targeted annual appeal segmentation; a planned giving program)
• Manage internal staff and consultants who will carry out the annual gala planning and execution, appeals, foundation prospecting and vetting, grant writing and reporting, data management, gift processing, and other special development-related special events, and projects.
TO COLLABORATE INTERDEPARTMENTALLY
• Help develop compelling funding proposals and reports to foundations and corporations; work closely with colleagues to develop accurate budgets and financial reports for funders.
• Foster strong working relationships with staff and volunteers to create innovative pitches to foundation funders, collect data for proposals and reports, and host onsite events.
• Collaborate with design staff to create compelling and visually-appealing development materials.
• Collaborate with programming staff to create development opportunities around a wide variety of initiatives.
• Serve as a visible ambassador at development and program-related events.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum eight years of experience in a senior-level development position – ideally for an arts organization – with demonstrated ability to manage concurrent projects with energy, grace, efficiency and flexibility.
• Bachelors’ Degree required, Masters’ Degree in non-profit management, public administration, or arts administration is a plus.
• Authentic and open in gaining respect and support of a broad range of constituencies and stakeholders.
• Measurable success meeting organizational fundraising targets.
• Successful record of board development and engagement.
• Deep understanding of donor cultivation and stewardship.
• Successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual donors, corporations, and foundations in the New York City area.
• Knack for (and track record of) identifying and deploying the right messenger at the right moment to achieve successful major donor results.
• Demonstrated gala success.
• Excellent, clear and compelling writing skills.
• Outstanding organizational skills.
• Understanding of budgets and non-profit finance.
• Available to work during non-business hours (e.g., evenings, weekends) to support key events and opportunities.
