KMBC 9 News is looking for an Assignment Editor to join our team and help lead our daily newsgathering effort. Ideal candidate will be a self-motivated and highly-organized person with strong leadership skills and managerial abilities.
Job Responsibilities:
• Monitoring radio scanners and social media accounts for breaking news
• Coordinating, dispatching, tracking, and maintaining communication with reporters and photographers in the field
• Maintaining court files, future event planning, and daily newsgathering information
• Gather and disseminate information on stories
• Develop sources and generate story ideas
• Receive and investigate news tips
• Demonstrate sense of urgency with breaking news
• Take an active role in next day and long-term planning
Experience Requirements:
• Experience as an Assignment Editor or similar position on a local TV newsroom
• Familiar with local newsgathering technology and terminology
Qualifications Requirements:
• Strong people and phone skills as well as the ability to work in a team atmosphere
• Must be highly organized
• Have the ability to work multiple projects simultaneously
• Must be able to foster and maintain professional working relationships with newsmakers and sources
• Have the ability to gather information from multiple sources simultaneously and quickly push it out to anchors, reporters, producers and digital editors
• Must have a sense of urgency and be able to thrive in a high pressure breaking news and weather environment
• Be able to remain calm and level-headed during breaking news situations
• Must have excellent communication skills
• Willing to work a variety of shifts including weekends and nights
Education:
• College degree in Broadcast Journalism, or related field
• Military training and experience will be considered
