USA TODAY Network Storytelling Developer- Mclean, VA
Gannett, owner of USA TODAY and more than 100 newsrooms across the country, seeks a full-stack developer to join the USA TODAY Network Storytelling Studio. The Storytelling Studio works at the intersection of Gannett’s product division and editorial teams, building innovative project presentations and tools to create new story forms.
The USA TODAY Network reaches more than 110 million readers and viewers every month, and the Storytelling Developer will play a critical role in growing that audience while also reinforcing our brand as a pioneering journalistic organization. The ideal candidate for this position will have both technical and news experience.
Responsibilities
• Collaborate with the Storytelling Studio’s developers, designers and project managers to ship amazing digital news experiences
• Contribute to storytelling projects with hands-on development and editing
• Pitch innovations and journalism projects originated by the storytelling team
• Coordinate with product division teams on the “productization” of storytelling tools and systems
Qualifications
• Minimum 5 years experience with client- and server-based programming languages and frameworks: Javascript, NodeJS, Angular, Go, Python, etc., preferably in the media industry
• Experience with tools for Agile development and code source control, such as JIRA, Confluence, Github
• Familiarity with provisioning resources and deploying applications to cloud environments such as AWS
• Passion for innovation in news presentation and experiences
Details you’d probably like to know
• We have a proprietary, enterprise-scale content management system, Presto, with its own dedicated product team.
• The new architecture of our websites (desktop and mobile) is based on a system of Polymer web components backed by modular microservices in Golang.
• Other pieces of our stack include Javascript, Express, Angular, NodeJS, plus REST APIs hitting Couchbase, Solr and RabbitMQ, with Jenkins for continuous integration and Github for source control and code review.
