The Communications and Media Relations Department (part of WGBH’s Marketing and Communications division) is responsible for all local and institutional media relations, constituent communications, publications (including the monthly Explore! member program guide), and curating and programming our digital mural. The department is responsible for the creation of a variety of communications materials (print, web, electronic), providing in-house editorial services (writing, copyediting, proofing), and media outreach to promote WGBH to its many constituents including local viewers and listeners, online audiences, members, donors, Board leadership, community leaders, press and the general public.
Position Overview
This senior management position develops and implements impactful communication strategies that heighten positive awareness of WGBH as a preeminent public media organization. Reporting to the Vice President for Communications and Government Relations, this hands-on role establishes and actively engages in comprehensive approaches for outreach to press and influencers to increase engagement and support for WGBH. Responsible for regional and national promotion of TV, radio and online programs as well as institution and leadership, educational and mission-related events and activities. Identifies media opportunities and public appearances for WGBH leadership, providing media training as needed. Serves as primary media contact for institution and plays strategic role in issues and reputation management. Provides supervision and direction to team of three whose primary duties are press/public relations, using traditional, social and new media tactics. Monitors external environment, public opinion/trends and policy issues related to public media industry to strategize about appropriate related messaging, and support community and government relations efforts. Works collaboratively with WGBH senior team across multiple departments.
Skills Required
Minimum of ten years working in professional media/public relations or communications role. Background in journalism and familiarity with public broadcasting a plus.
Significant and demonstrated press/public relations experience including issues management; demonstrated experience developing relations with media and serving as spokesperson; experience managing and developing team of communications professionals; success in managing major strategic projects; proven ability to communicate messaging and priorities clearly and effectively; ability to collaborate with colleagues across complex institution, juggle multiple assignments on deadline, and remain calm under pressure; ability to identify and execute compelling stories that inspire audiences to engage with WGBH.
Educational Requirements
Bachelor's degree required.
