The Iowa City Press-Citizen, part of the USA Today Network, has an immediate opening for a passionate, video-oriented photojournalist looking to work in an innovative, digital newsroom.
The ideal candidate isn’t waiting for stories to come from our reporting staff, but pitching highly visual projects rooted in community journalism. You will be asked to pull from an array of storytelling tools: video, still images, words, social-friendly posts on Twitter and more. We want someone who can help elevate the video work of our staff, spending part of their weekly shift developing and producing video pieces. If you are just as comfortable shooting a Division I college football game on deadline as you are working on a longer-form video documentary, this is the job for you.
Located in Eastern Iowa, Iowa City is home to the University of Iowa and the acclaimed Iowa Writers’ Workshop. The area hosts national and international events, including the Olympic Wrestling Trials, the Wrestling World Cup and the Cyclo-cross World Cup, and this year is a stop along for RAGBRAI, the annual bike ride across the state. It’s also one of the first stops for presidential candidates every four years ahead of the Iowa Caucuses.
Here's what you need to be successful at the Press-Citizen:
• Bachelor's degree in journalism or photography
• Exceptional core photojournalism skills and ethics
• A passion for video storytelling, with the ability to complete a long-form project as well as break down a complex subject into a quick, social-friendly video
• Proficiency using photo and video editing software, including Photoshop, Adobe Premiere and Photo Mechanic
• Experience shooting and editing photos and video on an iPhone
• Ability to write accurate, detailed captions
• Understanding of social media and how to engage fan bases on digital platforms
• Effective communication skills; able to get along with diverse personalities
• Ability to multitask, adapt and use time efficiently under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing industry
• Experience with (or a willingness to learn) live video platforms and Adobe After Effects preferred
