PYRG - Editorial Assistant/Asst. Editor, Kokila
Kokila brings together an inclusive community of authors and illustrators, publishing professionals, and readers to examine and celebrate stories that reflect the richness of our world.By centering stories from the margins and making space for storytellers to explore the full range of their experiences, we deliver books that inspire and entertain readers, and add nuance and depth to the way children and young adults see the world and their place in it. Kokila will publish work for children and young adults across all formats and genres.
We are currently looking for an editorial assistant or assistant editor to join the Kokila team. The position reports to the publisher and will provide administrative and editorial support while coordinating between authors, agents, and different departments within the division. Depending on level of experience, this position will have the opportunity to acquire 1-2 books per year for the list.
The ideal candidate is an ambitious self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit who is enthusiastic about building a new publishing program and contributing to it in meaningful ways. A passion for the work and a belief in the power of stories to nourish young minds is essential. Must be a strong writer and critical thinker who enjoys a wide range of titles for children and young adults--from literary to commercial.
Position Summary:
• Assists Publisher with daily editorial activities, including proposal/manuscript screening and project follow-up. Provides administrative and clerical support to supervisor and editorial staff. Additionally, s/he acts as a liaison between authors, agents and different departments within the company
• Assists in all processes of book production from acquisition to publication while building skills to start acquiring projects for their own list
• Assists editors with ongoing book projects including evaluating and writing submission reports, writing jacket and sales copy. Keeps up to date regarding promotion, publicity, review status of books
POSITION PERFORMS MOST OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING DUTIES:
• Logs, traffics and maintains files on in-coming manuscripts through stages of publication
• Reads and evaluates manuscripts, suggests cuts or revisions and writes reader reports.
• Provides follow-up on the editing and production steps of assigned acquisition projects.
• Prepares front matter, body text, copyright, and cover text; formats, and traffics books through all stages of production
• Sends manuscripts to production after checking for neatness, clarity of directions to printer/designer, & sequence of materials.
• Performs administrative and clerical tasks such as typing correspondence, answering telephones, and maintaining files.
• Assists with scheduling of titles, creating spreadsheets, and list planning
• Inter-faces with Library of Congress in the obtaining of CIP data and LC numbers.
• Draft P&Ls, contract proposals, catalog copy, and Title Information sheets
• Attends editorial meetings.
• Photo research as necessary
• Keeps up with competition and trade journals
• May proofread and copyedit subject to second look by supervising editor
• Creates back ads for mass market books
• Provides computer support and training to editorial staff
• Acts as a liaison between authors, agents and different departments within the company.
• Performs other related projects or duties as assigned or required by division.
• Tracks and evaluates agent submitted and unsolicited manuscripts; evaluates potential paperback reprints of hardcovers from small presses
• Reads submissions for editors; works with authors from line editing through every stage of manuscript through completion
• Writes jacket and catalog copy and prepares fact sheets, blurbs and teasers
• May scout and develop new editorial talent
• Reads review journals to be aware of trends and competitor’s lists
• Provides clerical support, including filling/trafficking forms and other paperwork; filing; handling correspondence; answering phones; mailing, etc.
• Assists in maintaining imprint social media presence

REQUIRMENTS
• 4 year college degree
• Prior office experience (job or internships)
• Experience in publishing (any area) helpful
