Overview
The mission of Nelson Books is to publish great books from Christian authors that inform, inspire, and lead to changes that matter—in this life and the next. Our authors include Donald Miller, Lysa TerKeurst, Bob Goff, John Eldredge, Jen Hatmaker, Eric Metaxas, R. Albert Mohler, Jr., Jefferson Bethke, and many others.
This position is open to an experienced editor who will oversee manuscripts through the production process, from copyedit to final product.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Manages multiple projects while maintaining high standards of quality and meeting deadlines on tight production schedules.
• Provides necessary support to acquisitions editors so that all assigned manuscripts are printer-ready.
• Reviews changes from freelancers and authors, updating manuscripts appropriately.
• Verifies corrections to manuscripts.
• Develops excellent working relationships with colleagues, including acquisitions editors, marketing and publicity staff, sales people, production staff, designers, typesetters, and freelancers.
• Assists with various editions of assigned projects, including special editions, international, and trade paper conversions.
• Responds to manuscript requests from marketing, publicity, and sales.
• Works with authors and agents to secure permissions, releases, and endorsements, as needed, and to obtain approval for text design, copyediting, cover design, and cover copy.
• Coordinates creation of cover copy and catalog copy, writing and proofreading as needed.
• Updates reprint corrections.
• Attends and contributes to production and other related meetings.
• Communicates with in-house coordinator to hire freelancers for each stage of the editing process.
• Oversees budgets for editorial expenses (copyeditors, proofreaders, indexers).
• Works closely with Grupo on simultaneous Spanish releases.
Qualifications
Knowledge:Thorough knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style; familiar with the Bible and evangelical Christian doctrine
Work Experience:4 years as an editor
Education:Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or related field
Industry Knowledge:Keeps up with trends in the publishing industry by reading trade magazines, such as Publisher’s Weekly; working knowledge of popular Christian books and authors a plus
Skills:
• Able to handle simultaneously many projects in various stages of completion.
• Editorial and team-based skills.
• Detail oriented; eagle-eyed at catching errors.
• Able to learn new systems quickly, such as HarperCollins’ proprietary software for managing manuscripts
