Book Designer (Contract)
Division/Department: Heinemann/Production
Role Summary: The successful candidate will be responsible for the hands-on development and production of highly creative, author-centric, content-responsive, and market-appropriate cover and text designs that strategically support and promote educational professional development content. Working in a highly collaborative and fast-paced team environment, the Designer will read and interpret manuscripts, transforming them into responsive, dynamic, thoughtful, and accessible designs. From initial conceptualization discussions through to final file release, the successful candidate will prototype/present designs, develop art programs, and layout/typeset pages. Must possess expert-level InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator skills, be detail- and deadline-oriented, and demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills.
Responsibilities:
• Work collaboratively in a team environment (editors, authors, production editors, marketing and manufacturing staff) to conceptualize, revise, and implement original, highly-creative, and market-appropriate visual solutions for a variety of professional educational print projects.
• Adhere to established workflows on schedule, on budget, and to the highest quality standards.
• Manage prepress page production, quality control, collect and preflight files, and version management.
• For projects typeset out-of-house, prepare approved design files for release to outside compositors, answering questions, resolving inconsistencies, and providing additional designs as needed.
• Adapt designs to ancillary components, modifying as needed.
• Review cover/page proofs for completeness and accuracy.
• Lend expertise/skills across departments as needed.
Education level: BA/BS in Graphic Design, or comparable visual arts field.
Knowledge and skills:
• Minimum of 3-5 years of professional print design experience, preferably in a book publishing environment.
• Expert-level skills required in Adobe Creative Cloud InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, in a Mac-based environment. Comprehensive prepress skills.
• Able to move seamlessly from one project to another, managing multiple concurrent projects/deadlines.
• Outstanding creative and problem-solving skills, and excellent organizational, collaborative, and communication skills.
