Payroll Director
The Director of Payroll is responsible for leading all aspects of payroll including disbursement, accounting and taxes. This position will direct the accurate disbursement of multi-state (US) and multi-provincial (Canada) payroll, including, but not limited to, wages, supplementary income, withholding taxes, garnishments, and benefit deductions, to approximately 15,000 employees. This position is responsible for the end to end payroll process from time collection to remitting taxes and for compliance with all federal, state, provincial, and local laws and reporting requirements. This is done through collaboration with HR, IT, corporate accounting and tax as well as third party advisors and auditors. This includes directing and facilitating various teams, with the full ownership and accountability for ensuring quality deliverables through a controlled and efficient process and a continual focus on process enhancement and maintaining adequate internal controls over payroll operations and reporting.
The ideal candidate will have strong payroll skills, ability to manage multiple projects, the ability to communicate across all levels of the organization (including our external auditors and advisors) and the skill to juggle conflicting priorities in a very fast paced environment. The Director of Payroll will lead a team of approximately 15 to perform the payroll functions in the US and Canada.
Duties include:
• Ensure accurate disbursement of payroll for all US and Canadian employees, enterprise wide.
• Critically review and analyze current payroll procedures and implement changes leading to best practice operations.
• Manage preparation of reporting to all required government agencies, such as required monthly, quarterly and year end reporting, including timely issuance of Forms W2 to all employees.
• Lead, support and train payroll team.
• Coordinate responses to internal and external audit inquiries, as well as inquiries from federal, state, and local government agencies.
• Maintain security of all payroll transactions and confidentiality of all payroll matters.
• Manage, maintain and improve internal control processes.
• Serve as a key member on enterprise-wide projects and system implementation efforts.
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Math, Finance, or Accounting; Member of American Payroll Association preferred.
• 10 + years in a payroll leadership position.
• Strong payroll accounting skills.
• Ability to build strong working relationships with HR, IT and financial personnel.
• Detail-oriented with demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with senior management and influence decision making.
• Strong project management skills with the ability to plan, execute and deliver on projects in a timely manner in a dynamic environment.
• Strong multi-tasking skills and ability to adapt to change.
• Ability to attract, develop and retain a competent and committed team
• Proficiency in Payroll systems, preferably Ceridian, Microsoft Professional Office Applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
