Job Description
The Director of Application Software Development is a highly motivated and technically astute professional, who possess deep technical knowledge, along with the ability to provide engineering vision and strategy. The position will own, oversee, drive, and deliver all software development, deployment, and maintenance activities. In addition, this position needs to provide expert advice on architecture of existing and new products. The incumbent must have a service oriented mindset, should be a team player, and a good people manager. This person will provide technical and strategic guidance to team members located in the US as well as offshore locations, focused on software design, development, deployment, and maintenance. Proven experience working in a matrix environment will be critical to the success of this role.
Role Objectives:
Technical Skills & Subject Matter Expertise
• Responsible for managing onshore and offshore software development activities, for the core product portfolio offered by Performics’ Analytics & Technology department, from inception to release and maintenance.
• While this position is not expected to write code, hands on experience is strongly required. The incumbent should be able to remove hurdles for his/her team by jumping in the trenches with the development team as needed. The guidance provided to the technical team should be concrete and deeply technical, so that developers can approach the incumbent as a mentor for solving complex problems.
• Closely manages the quality and timeliness of delivery by establishing critical metrics to ensure that code is stable, well tested, mature, and well document. Continuously evaluates processes for quality control and delivery.
• Explore existing systems, and determine areas of complexity and potential risks to successful implementation.
• Design new products; evaluate what technology stack should be used in its development; choose the right programming language, database, schema etc.; help architect the system; monitor development progress
• Grow and evolve the suite of products offered by Performics’ Analytics & Technology department, utilizing the latest software technologies, platforms, standards and methodologies.
• Oversee integration with external data sources and third-party platforms.
• Grow, lead, and mentor team of experienced engineers both on site and offshore and provide a balance between empowerment and direction.
• Possess deep knowledge in technical areas such as web development, Java, HTML, CSS, Python, PHP, SQL/PLSQL, JavaScript, database schema, data modeling, agile/scrum process, SDLC, API integration, data warehousing, and data mining.
• Provides key guidance to Engineering teams regarding project definition, scope, philosophy, activities, milestones, and resource allocations, per business and technical requirements.
• Oversees proper technical documentation for all products and associated codebase; develop and implement documentation standards across the engineering organization.
• Evaluate and implement application development and quality frameworks to enable fast application delivery.
Process, People, & Team Development
• Lead and enhance our agile methodology for the design, development, testing and release of our products and services.
• Build and grow the technical team – both onshore and offshore – in terms of their technical and client skills.
• Embrace and encourage a culture based on team work, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity
• Motivate, lead, and manage internal teams, working collaboratively to drive progress towards business objectives
• Drive adoption of best practices by example setting, positive reinforcement and behavioral correction
• Assist in interviewing, hiring, training, mentoring, developing, and evaluating team members
• Conduct performance reviews and career path plans for direct reports
• Handle all aspects of communication and planning with product management and analytics partners.
• Collaborate constructively with multiple internal teams including; product management, analytics, media, new business, and client solutions
• Ensure knowledge sharing of best practices across engineering departments.
• Must be a team player/coach and provide detailed troubleshooting assistance while fully understanding product/project requirements.
• Work closely with Sr. leadership, Application and Product teams to communicate progress and challenges
• Build strong delivery teams and develop strong partnerships across the US and global organizations
• Continually refresh and invigorate essential program strategies to ensure they continually deliver best in class results and have the support of all stakeholders
• Break down large scale projects into manageable chunks, with clear timelines.
Practice Management & Development
• Identify opportunities to expand services and protect agency interests
• Understand and explain the features and benefits of all Performics products and services
• Continually evaluate, in association with the product team, the cost-benefit of maintain the current version of the software, developing new features, deprecating old features or products etc.
• Prepare and deliver strategic presentations to executives to report out results and build consensus for key projects.
• Ensure that systems are working properly by carrying out testing procedures
• Ensure that systems satisfy quality standards and procedures
Qualifications
• Experience supporting and scaling SaaS products with web and data management components.
• Excellent knowledge of Agile methodology and JIRA
• Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience dealing with a broad range of technical areas including; security, cloud hosting, infrastructure deployment, reliability, availability and platform performance.
• Excellent communication skills, strong team skills, and the ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced, high-productivity environment.
• Experience in building and maintaining applications that are mission critical.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences / Information Technology / MIS, or its equivalent; MBA is a plus.
• 10+ years of application development experience, including managing development teams
• Proven experience managing and mentoring a team
• Able to work independently and balance multiple tasks.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Strong understanding of digital marketing and measurement strategy and techniques
• Understanding of data flow and systems including agency and client licensed platforms
