The Bose Professional Division is experiencing exciting growth and looking for motivated and energetic people, excited to work on products that enable outstanding experiences for our customers and their clients. Part of this experience is how user documentation enables our customers to quickly and accurately install, configure, and tune systems with our products. Bose Pro is looking for a qualified Lead Technical Writer has a passion for working with and leading a team to deliver owner/user/installation guides and software help files.
As a Lead Technical Writerin Bose Professional, you will be responsible for leading the generation of user-facing product documentation. These products fall in four main categories – loudspeakers, signal processors and controls, amplifiers, and supporting design software. These products are engineered to meet the unique sound system demands of a wide range of venues: from world-class performing arts centers and professional sports stadiums, to commercial audio installations such as retail and hospitality
Duties and responsibilities of Lead Technical Writer include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Leads a small team of writers and illustrators, both in-house and freelance resources, performing a traffic function for both new product and revision projects, while driving training and improvement opportunities within team.
• Responsible for owning the complete documentation process for the division, including communication standards, master schedules for projects of different scopes, stakeholder lists, user documentation regulatory requirements, templates, in-box and online documentation strategies (including translation requirements), and documentation control system workflows.
• With engineering, drives full-inclusion and transparency of user documentation into each product development plan. Aligns and evangelizes latest user doc process with engineering, product management, legal, safety and supporting agencies.
• Serves as primary continuous interface with engineering project management, sharing schedules, providing updates, partners to keep work on track amidst dynamic development cycles.
• Participate in documentation planning sessions for each new product/program, maintaining/updating the status of each project using project management tools, and communicating status to program managers and launch teams on a weekly basis.
• Project manages the development of user documentation for both new product and documentation revisions to existing products, plans resources during peak periods, coordinates reviews with engineering, product management, corporate legal and safety stakeholders.
• Conducts interviews with various users and technical staff to gather data for documentation then authors accurate technical user documentation.
• Comfortable in learning and using prototype or production hardware and software products to check documentation quality.
• Publishes documentation to documentation control systems and coordinates document release with program management for initial product production.
• Reports product usability and functional issues/concerns to engineering team.
Skills
• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience creating documentation for industrial or commercial hardware and software products; experience producing documentation for Professional Audio equipment is desired, but not required
• Experience leading team of internal and freelance writers focused on technical product user documentation
• Project management experience, ability to manage several simultaneous projects and can operate in changing conditions and priorities
• Should demonstrate and have high proficiency in English language writing
• High level of ownership and responsibility, able to follow-through and has high attention to detail
• Professional training and/or certification in Adobe InDesign
• Working technical capability with the following software:
◦ Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite applicable applications (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), older PageMaker
◦ Microsoft: Outlook, Word, Excel, PPT
◦ Intermediate level of expertise in MadCap Flare or RoboHELP is required
◦ Experience with print production processes and workflows
• Experience with digital communication methods (web, on-screen display, mobile devices)
• Expert at written English language with knowledge of translation/localization methods
• Ability to integrate into cross-functional technical teams
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Knowledge of professional audio system design, operation, and installation is highly desired
• Experience with live-sound and/or studio sound engineering is an advantage; at a minimum, the candidate should possess a hobby-interest and passion for live music and audio products
Education
• BA/MA preferred, in English, Technical Communications, related field or equivalent experience
