DK - Temporary Project Editor
The Project Editor is primarily responsible for managing the revision and repackaging of backlist titles, working with existing authors across various lifestyle categories to ensure that new editions reflect current market demands.
The ideal candidate is experienced in contract negotiation, has excellent organizational, time management and communication skills, is a persuasive, creative thinker with broad interests, and is comfortable working under tight deadlines.
Candidates need to have a proven ability for building and maintaining relationships and 1-3 years trade acquisition, or 3-4 years related experience. Strong negotiating, writing, and verbal skills are essential. The Acquisitions Editor should be an innovative problem solver who can consider any and all possibilities when trying to reach the revision/repackaging, scheduling, and financial goals of a project. Other qualifications: BA or higher in English, Liberal Arts, Writing, Journalism or equivalent; computer proficiency in Word, Excel, and/or Google Docs; and familiarity with contracts.
Extensive use of computer keyboards and the telephone required.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Work with Publisher to identify backlist titles that would most benefit from revision and/or repackaging, in and outside of the Idiot’s Guides series
• Research the market and competition to guide revision/repacking efforts
• Guide and evaluate author suggestions for revisions
• Occasionally acquire new writers/contributors when they are needed for a project
• Negotiate contract amendments with authors, and occasional new contracts with new writers, within the established parameters of the financial targets set for the project
• Understand and evaluate the financial implications of contract options, using established P&L forms and systems
• Work with Layout to retrieve manuscript files from archiving and prep them for authors
• Work with authors to establish and maintain the schedules of projects
• Ensure that authors deliver high quality material in a timely manner
• Hire and manage freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers to ensure the timely and accurate flow of content through the editorial process
• Check and clean up manuscript files to ensure they are error free before turning over to layout
• Meet assigned goals for number of contracts signed and/or titles published
• Write and/or edit cover copy, sales sheets, and other related materials
• Receive and track backlist errors and submit corrections for upcoming reprints
