Overview

Job Summary
The Publisher is charged with leading and managing all aspects of the publishing program(s). This includes being responsible for business planning and management, product and market development, overseeing the editorial cycle from Editorial Board to Pub Board, and delivery of book projects to printer. This may also include oversight of an editorial team and will include close collaboration with marketing team members on a routine basis. This role will personally be responsible for identifying, pursuing, presenting, acquiring, and substantively editing 8-12 projects per year. Success will be defined as meeting or exceeding annual goals and plans – especially revenue and profit goals.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the Publisher include but are not limited to:
1. Business Planning and Management:casts vision for the HC Leadership publishing program, leads the team in long-term planning (frontlist, backlist, brand product planning), analyzes monthly financials and reports on them at business review meeting; and leads development of annual revenue plan.
2. Sales Collaboration:collaborates with sales on development of annual revenue plan, leads monthly Tactical meetings, leads monthly Pub Board meetings, meets one-on-one with sales channel heads as needed, reviews catalog pages and back cover and flap copy, leads team in preparing for Sales Conference, and presents key titles at Sales Conference.
3. Author Acquisition:develops productive relationships with literary agents; actively pursues, receives, and reviews book proposals from them on an ongoing basis; identifies and pursues potential author targets; creates book concepts for target authors as needed; makes initial contacts and sets meetings; prepares proposals and makes presentations at Ed Board and Pub Board meetings; manages financial approval process for HCL projects; negotiates major deal terms; and works with contracts team to develop long-form contract.
4. Substantive Editing:oversees developmental editing for HCL projects and delivers final manuscript and editorial direction to assigned editor.
5. Team Building:meets with, coaches, and develops direct reports; prepares for and conducts employee performance reviews; and hires and trains new employees as needed. Manages onsite and remote direct reports as necessary.
6. Author Retention:develops productive relationships with HCL authors; as necessary, creates book concepts for current authors; prepares for and attends planning meetings with HCL authors.
7. Program Management:ensures the HCL publishing lists are filled out and well-spaced in time for annual planning and presentation to sales; ensures we are publishing to our target categories and stated revenue goals; plans for ancillary products including derivatives and format conversions; manages integration of backlist titles from other imprints.
8. Product Development:leads development of digital product offerings (including online learning programs) for HCL authors; leads Titling meetings for HCL books to achieve final, approved copy by Sales Conference; leads catalog process on an approved schedule for Sales Conference; coordinates approval of front cover copy and cover design by HCL authors as needed; edits back cover copy and flap copy; makes product presentations at Sales Conference.
9. Program Management:leads the HCL acquisitions cycle from Editorial Board to Pub Board; oversees on-time delivery of book projects to printer; ensures: (1) manuscript receipt by contractual due dates, and (2) efficient editorial processing from substantive development stage to copy edit.
10. Managing Up:prepares notes from meetings with authors and agents for SVP/Publisher, meets with SVP/Publisher to review the business, and responds to requests and special assignments.
11. Travel: represents Company and the HCL imprint at industry conferences; attends consumer conferences where potential author relationships can be developed; meets with literary agents, potential authors, and current authors as needed to develop good opportunities and relationships.
Qualifications
Work Experience: At least 10 years in publishing, with 3-5 years in a leadership role that included budget planning and forecasting, and P&L responsibility. At least 5 years of book acquisitions experience. Supervisory experience managing multiple direct reports required. At least 2 years of online course development experience strongly preferred.
Education: Master’s Degree in Business, English, Journalism, Communications, or related field strongly preferred; Bachelor’s degree required. Additional training in business management or fundamentals of finance/accounting is desirable.
General and/or Industry Knowledge: Knowledge of book publishing market— key competitors, authors, and agencies; current content, branding, marketing, and sales trends; and online learning trends. Knowledge and experience working in the business/leadership product space strongly preferred.
