The Spectrum in St. George, Utah, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a dynamic leader to oversee the St. George newsroom and satellite offices in Cedar City, Utah, and Mesquite, Nevada. The director of content, the top position in the newsroom, will be responsible for leading a team of reporters and photographers in providing high-quality content using data and analysis to zero in on the topics and issues most important to key audiences.
The director will coach reporters to make strategic decisions about coverage and will direct and champion investigative and First Amendment journalism. The director works collaboratively on content initiatives and monitors online traffic to ensure staff members are putting their efforts into content that will be the most relevant and useful for our readers. The successful candidate will collaborate with the digital production team and design studio daily, plan content across products and platforms, and set the editorial tone.
We want someone who is capable of coaching journalists, building audience, using multimedia effectively and understanding how to use data to shape content. Excellent news judgment and editing skills also are a must. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in journalism and at least five years of experience in writing, editing and management roles. Qualified applicants must provide resume, cover letter and work samples.
One of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, St. George is paradise for those who love the outdoors and the home to world-class events such as the Huntsman World Senior Games and the St. George Marathon. The economic hub of southern Utah, St. George features many of the country’s most popular retailers and restaurants, as well as a cutting-edge hospital (Dixie Regional Medical Center), a budding state university (Dixie State University) and the award-winning Tuacahn Center for the Arts. Two of Utah’s five national parks, Zion and Bryce Canyon, are in St. George’s backyard, as are four state parks and two national conservation areas.
St. George is located about two hours east of Las Vegas, in the northeastern-most part of the Mojave Desert. The summertime weather is predictably hot; the winter months are mild and typically free of even a dusting of snow. The city’s population is about 80,000, or about half of Washington County’s total of some 150,000.
