Editor, Americanization
DK, a publisher of award-winning, illustrated reference, video game guides, children’s and life style trade books is seeking an Americanization Editor to adapt and americanize nonfiction adult and children’s books originated in the UK or other sister company locations, to ensure that the language, punctuation, and content are fully applicable to the US market and that US sales are maximized.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Hires and/or supervises freelance Americanizers and consultants/technical editors, managing contracts, schedules, fonts, budgets, invoices, and work quality.
• Researches and hires foreword writers, consulting with agents and contract management.
• Researches book topics and competing titles; provides developmental feedback on book contents lists to ensure books cover the topics that American readers will seek.
• Keeps files organized, runs proprietary QC app, and fixes or flags technical errors; transfers files between self or freelancers and UK or Delhi production department.
• Reviews book photography and comments on changes needed for US audience, or facilitates review of consultant.
• Performs Americanization edits on books and marketing materials directly in InDesign files or by marking up PDFs depending on project needs; incorporates technical changes from consultants; fixes and tracks proofreading errors.
• Flexibly meets deadlines and notifies Executive Managing Editor and Executive Editor of schedule delays on either end.
• Reviews and Americanizes book cover copy, and confirms specifications (price, ISBN, etc.).
• Performs other related projects or duties as assigned or required by division.
Requirements:
• 4-year degree in English, journalism, linguistics, editing, or related field
• 3 years copyediting or proofreading experience
• 1 year development editing or acquisitions experience
• Use of MAC platform
• Knowledge of MS Office, Excel; Adobe InDesign, Acrobat; FontExplorer; FTP programs
• Strong organization skills
• Detail oriented
• Interest in and exposure to cultural and linguistic differences among English-speaking countries
• Ability to prioritize and handle multiple functions concurrently
