The USA TODAY NETWORK is looking for an experienced Sr. Director, UX & Design to lead, mentor and grow a talented team of UX architects, user researchers, visual and interaction designers.
In addition to strong visual and interaction skills, you must be able to articulate product strategy through the lens of human-centered design, to weaponize data insights for increased engagement, and to shape narratives around the game-changing work we’re doing.

Responsibilities:
• Consistently advocate for the holistic and forward-looking design vision of the USA TODAY NETWORK across products, platforms, and feature teams
• Keep an eye toward the future while tracking the needs of the present
• Grow and manage a nationally-distributed UX & Design team; allowing people to think and work independently; valuing, trusting and respecting team members and their ideas, expertise, contributions, unique traits and needs
• Actively invest in team-building exercises, mentoring opportunities and the professional development of team members
• Develop a comprehensive hiring strategy aimed at maximizing employee engagement and optimal resource allocation
• Establish and maintain the structure and standards for workflow and work produced
• Communicate concepts, ideas and design rationale with project stakeholders
• Help ensure that the broader organization makes user-centered decisions
• Contribute to multidisciplinary teams (which can include content creators, front-end developers, visual designers and project managers) to develop site improvements and additions based on business objectives, usability studies and research metrics
• Communicate with product leads and engineers in their language, designing with consideration for their cares and concerns
• Foster a highly-collaborative design process and, as a result, become trusted to talk through both scope and technical challenges and negotiate thoughtful outcomes
Requirements/Qualifications:
• Demonstrated ability to build and grow UX/design teams
• Must be a methodical and detail-oriented problem solver
• Experience using research and analytics to inform design, effectively presenting and explaining results with quantitative information
• Passion for media and journalism, and demonstrated ability to understand the industry’s challenges and opportunities
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in graphic, UX, HCI, or web design
• 5-7+ years experience in the field of user-centered design; 3+ years experience in managing people and design teams
• Must have an online portfolio
• Command of industry best practices in information design and architecture, usability and accessibility, and scalable, dynamic user interfaces
• Comprehension of relevant business and economic principles
• Sensitivity to customer satisfaction, both internal and external, is key
• Ability to accurately handle multiple projects, meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
