The Springfield News-Leader, a Gannett Company and member of the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an opening for a Producer to manage the delivery of content to digital and print platforms.
The producer manages the delivery of content to digital and print platforms and meets deadlines. He/she works with content strategists, the audience analyst, planning editors, content coaches, reporters and photographers to best display content on all platforms, using a high level of judgment and creativity. The producer collaborates with engagement editors to maximize social media presence and copy edits some content before publishing to digital platforms or handing off to a design studio. The producer looks for opportunities for quick-turn content to maximize responsiveness to current events and capitalize on viral opportunities.
In this role, you will:
• Manage the homepage, story pages and high-traffic landing pages. Direct the flow of content, sending breaking news emails and push alerts, adding meta-data information, hyperlinks, images, info boxes, and additional digital content. Writes digital headlines and summaries, taking into account SEO and keyword elements.
• Optimize, aggregate and package assets for print and digital publication. Assemble, format, prioritize and ensure quality control on all printed content before it is handed off to the design studio.
• Edit content for publication-readiness, including clarity, fairness, legality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and style.
• Work with digital planner to evaluate what’s working and what’s not and develops ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
• Watch trending news and local events, creating content — stories, photo galleries, videos — with local audience needs in mind.
• Use metrics to monitor real-time data to determine traffic patterns and direct changes tied to the data.
• Manage workflow to meet deadlines.
• Provide great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
Here’s what you need:
• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or equivalent in experience and education
• Two years’ experience writing SEO headlines
• Experience with storytelling techniques on multiple platforms
• Ability to interpret audience data
• Ability to edit top-notch watchdog journalism
• Exceptional core journalism skills (reporting, producing, editing)
• Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers’ time and money
• Self-motivated and self-directed
• Exceptional planning and organizational skills
• Advanced knowledge of social media and how to engage fan base on digital platforms
• Effective communication skills with diverse personalities
• Ability to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment
• Proven track record of effective time management in a 24-hour news environment
• Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment
• Embraces peer-to-peer feedback and training
• Applies innovative, creative thinking to support the company’s goals
• Mastery of writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style
• Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct
• News often requires employees to work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly.
• Candidates must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record, proof of insurance and their own transportation.
