Overview
The Director of News & Operations leads and manages the planning, production and presentation of news & overall content. The DNO supervises the news department staff and talk show producers. The DNO reports to (the VP of Content & Programming) and works in cooperation with station leadership and staff to support the WGN brand mission.
The DNO has responsibility and understanding of news planning, reporting, editing and production. The DNO helps define and maintain ethical, editorial, artistic and technical standards for broadcast news programs. The DNO assists with overall programming decisions and news operations. The DNO collaborates with the VP of Content & Programming and senior anchors/reporters to determine station’s journalistic strategy and preserve integrity of all station activities and platforms.
Responsibilities
• Editorial Planning, Program Scheduling, Payroll, and Budgeting.
• The Director of News & Operations directs the activities of the news & show production staff to develop story ideas, segment concepts, track issues and events, and collaborate with VP of Content to select reporters/hosts for coverage.
• The DNO acts as a proactive liaison to various internal and external constituencies to assist in merchandising content.
• Proactive in implementing creative ideas for the newscasts and talk shows including special reports and live broadcasts/streaming.
• Work in conjunction with the Director of Marketing and Innovation on special projects and event coordination.
• Helps lead social media engagement on multiple platforms.
• Manage programming and news schedule.
• Represent station at social and community functions.
• Generate audience analysis including monthly Nielsen audio reports.
• Work with accounting to complete payroll.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in communications or broadcast journalism or equivalent related experience.
• Ability to coach content that drives revenue.
• Minimum eight years related experience
• Strong organizational and communication skills and a keen attention to detail essential.
• Skilled at recruiting unique and reliable talent.
• Ability to be a leader in the newsroom and broader content team with skills to motivate others under deadline pressure.
• Work within budget guidelines
• Must be willing to submit to a background check and have unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.
