Overview
We are currently seeking an Editorial Assistant for a unique role at HarperCollins. The position involves assisting two Executive Editors at the Harper imprint and a Senior Publishing Manager with daily administrative and editorial responsibilities. This is a singular opportunity to learn all aspects of the publishing business from the ground up, with a focus on editorial. The Editorial Assistant will work on a list of primarily nonfiction (history, current events, biography, memoir, science, and narrative nonfiction), with a sprinkling of literary and commercial fiction. The candidate will also read manuscripts and proposals, in addition to maintaining a good knowledge of the books already acquired.
Responsibilities
• Maintains professional relationships with authors and agents.
• Liaises with marketing, publicity, sales, art, legal, and other departments and provides necessary materials as needed.
• Prepares factsheets and other materials leading up to launches and sales conferences.
• Prepares contract requests, check requests, and invoices, and tracks them throughout the approval process.
• Prepares manuscripts for production and routes them throughout the production process.
• Maintains praise sheets and online retailer pages.
• Provides administrative support including (but not limited to) opening mail, sending packages, making travel arrangements, scheduling meetings and appointments, answering telephones, preparing expense reports, maintaining files and records.
Qualifications
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Hardworking, and able to handle a large volume of administrative tasks
• Multitasking, time-management, and other organizational skills a must
• Strong attention to detail
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
• Prior office experience a plus
• Prior publishing experience a plus
• Four-year college degree or equivalent work experience
