Assistant/Associate Editor/Senior Editor, Genome Biology

Genome Biology publishes outstanding research in all areas of biology and biomedicine studied from a genomic and post-genomic perspective. The journal has a reputation for innovation, as one of the first high-impact Open Access publications. The editorial team prides itself on providing an excellent service to authors, reviewers and readers.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the editorial mission of Genome Biology, working as part of a dynamic team of editors who assess manuscripts, commission content and travel internationally to promote the journal. We are especially keen to recruit someone with expertise in one or more of the following areas: plant genomics, microbiome, or infectious disease genomics.
Responsibilities
For all roles
• Assessing manuscripts for advance, interest level and scientific content.
• Identifying peer reviewers and managing the peer review process.
• Developing expertise in one or more scientific area within the journal’s scope.
• Commissioning and editing content such as Reviews, Opinions and Research Highlights.
• Attending conferences and carrying out institute visits to represent the journal.
• Promotion of the journal via social media and suggesting articles for press releases and marketing.
Additional responsibilities for the Associate Editor role
• Contributing to journal strategy and policies.
• Helping to monitor journal performance.
• Project management of special issues and thematic series.
Additional responsibilities for the Senior Editor role
• Training and mentoring of junior team members.
• Responsibility for one or more area of journal policy or organization.
Job Requirements
For all roles
• A PhD or equivalent in a relevant area
• Broad scientific interests in areas relevant to the journal; an interest in plant genomics, microbiome, or infectious disease genomics would be especially desirable
• Excellent written communication skills
• Confident verbal communicator (by phone, in person, in groups)
• Good attention to detail
• Strong organizational and time-management skills
• Target-oriented
• Enthusiastic and collegial team player
• Willing to travel internationally to represent the journal at conferences
Desirable for the Associate and Senior Editor roles
• Previous editorial experience
• Awareness of current challenges and opportunities in scientific publishing
• In depth knowledge of relevant scientific areas.
