The Audio Editor is a key position within a large creative team dedicated to the ongoing construction of creative promotional content for distribution on national network services and global platforms. The incumbent is responsible for editing sound am mixing various long and short-form programs as interstitials for on-air network services, as well as programming associated with marketing campaigns for web, trade events, broadcast and in-theater advertising venues. The Audio Editor frequently teams with Starz producers, but is expected to continue productively for long periods without direct supervision. The incumbent may be assigned to a creative post production project anywhere within the scope of the project completion from rough cut to finishing and mastering.
The Audio Editor enables file-based workflows and deliveries to client approval services and systems in the broadcast or on-demand delivery chain. Must have intensive knowledge of technical quality considerations for the delivery platforms mentioned above. While shifts are designated for organizational and scheduling logistics, the incumbent may need to work beyond the boundaries of these shifts for deadline oriented output. While led by a Manager of Post Production, the Editor will often interact with executives throughout the organizations’ Denver and Beverly Hills locations. These executives may provide notes or other form of creative direction at their will.
Night hours and weekends may be required to support special campaigns or a night shift may be assigned to the position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Operates digital audio workstations (principally ProTools) and associated outboard equipment and integrated consoles to edit, mix, master, and fashion variants of promotional content. Audio Editor will use only approved libraries of graphic content, music and sound effects within projects, compliant with prevailing practice and recommendations from Business Affairs.
• Operate Dolby encode/decode hardware and software onto mastering media.
• Properly apply equalization, compression and effects (ProTools Plugins) according to Starz specifications, in accordance with industry standard and best practice.
• Operate NetMix sound effects/music database system to audition and retrieve audio for lock to picture purposes.
• Synchronize 5.1/2.0/1.0 audio to picture, to include effects, dialog, voiceover and music.
• Obtain proper balance of all elements within a mix during re-recording process.
• Interact with multiple file storage devices and comply with department archiving practices.
• Collaborate with producers/project managers to generate high quality programming and advertising material consistent with a nationally recognized premium program service.
• Offers suggestions and utilizes all available creative tools to execute and audition picture & sound revisions to creative team.
• Generate and ingest from OMF, AAF, EDL files and other media transport bundles to instantiate projects and transfer projects to other editing systems.
• Utilize our asset management systems to browse available media content in SAN.
• Utilize applications and watch folder systems to upload completed projects to distribution and approvals applications; transcode media prior to these operations
• Maintains high level of project media and metadata organization with our work-in-progress asset management systems.
• Responsible for professional application of Dolby LM-100 or other audio signal monitoring and processing to maintain pre-mix dialogue loudness to the prevailing specification and recommended practice.
• Utilize signal monitoring equipment to measure & evaluate audio, and metadata content to match outgoing delivery requirements and SMPTE, ATSC, NTSC recommended practices.
• Operate patch bay and router equipment to control signal input/output within the editing environment.
• Operate HD and SD VTR’s for short duration ingest and for output mastering to tape (including menu controls to support multi-channel audio, timecode, field or frame reference rates. VTR’s include Sony HDCAM, HDCAM SR and Panasonic D5 models.
• Report in detail daily project completion and the editor’s availability for further assignment to Manager, Post Production Scheduling of Scheduling Coordinator.
• Report equipment malfunctions for on-the-job resolution to Post Production Manager and/or Engineering representatives.
• Troubleshoot as required DAW and applications or performance of connected services, to determine whether escalation is required.
Required Skills:
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Proven national level advertising and programming editorial and graphic design experience, manifest in a professionally produced reel. Experience editing with multiple video tracks, picture effects, from and to a variety of color spaces, using contributed motion graphics and with multiple discreet audio channels.
• Professional application of audio signal monitoring and processing to maintain pre-mix dialogue loudness to prevailing specification and recommended practice by SMPTE, ATSC and FCC
• Eight or more years in broadcast post production with at least five continuous years of direct audio editing\mixing experience of content placed nationally for advertising agency clients; and/or nationally distributed broadcast or cable network service, three of these years must be associated with the promotion of serialized scripted dramatic programming and/or a major motion picture studio’s trailers.
• Proven national level advertising and programming editorial experience using timeline based DAW’s such as Pro tools and equivalent workstations.
• Experience with multi-track distribution and conforming within DAW.
