About the team
The UK Schools Science and Digital team is a dedicated, fun, supportive and knowledgeable group of people who work creatively to produce science teaching and learning resources for secondary school students and their teachers. We work in a collaborative organisation with people from many job functions working together to create resources which really have impact in classrooms. This role can be based in Oxford or London. Although many of the team are in Oxford, we have regular contact with London team members and some of the team work partly or wholly out of our London offices. You’ll report into one of our teams’ senior product managers.
About the role
We spend our time creating products and services that will make life better for teachers and learners in UK Schools. In this role, you will contribute to the development of great market-winning ideas. You will be responsible for working with a range of suppliers to develop, deliver and quality assure those products and services to a high quality ready to be used in the classroom.
In this role you will be responsible for commissioning specific components of a larger science programme. You will support our external suppliers to deliver our courses to market on time, to quality and within budget. You will work with our editorial teams, publishing, media research, design, supplier management, production and permissions on scoping and delivering market-leading print and digital products.
Location: The role can be based either from our London (Holborn) or Oxford offices
A day in the life of….
During a typical day here, you can expect to be involved in these activities:
Market understanding
• Researching and building your understanding of the secondary science school market to ensure that everything we do improves learning and is well researched and evidence based.
Strategy and financial planning
• Collaborating on the development of great ideas for new products and services.
• Contributing to financial planning processes as required.
• Tracking and managing budgets.
Proposition development and execution
• Finding key author talent, commissioning content and managing relationships with authors and series editors.
• Working with authors and external development editors to ensure manuscripts meet briefing and curriculum requirements.
• Briefing specialist reviewers, development editors and authors, as well as editing content yourself in order to make sure we deliver the best learner outcomes and the highest customer satisfaction that we can.
• Supporting suppliers to deliver publishing proposals on time, to desired quality and to budget.
• Quality assurance of content at key points during its development and production, ensuring that content is correct, accurate and pitched at the right level.
• Supporting team members to problem solve, and contributing to a positive working culture.
Qualifications
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for people with a good understanding of teaching and learning in science. It is desirable for you to have a degree or A levels in a science subject. Ideally, you will also have experience of either teaching or experience of developing products and services for UK schools.
We are looking to recruit at the most senior level for this role, but we would consider people new to the industry at an appropriate entry level for development on the job.
You’ll have the following skills and qualities:
• A desire to create market leading, impactful classroom tools
• Creative thinking and customer empathy: the ability to create and articulate propositions based soundly on customer needs
• Communication, relationship building and influencing skills both within the company and with external stakeholders
• Commercial and financial planning skills: the ability to work with a budget and manage costs and to contribute to financial planning processes
• Organisational and project management skills: the ability to plan and manage projects and the workload of any line managed and mentored staff
Desirable:
• Science education experience
• Strategic thinking skills: the ability to think strategically, identify attractive market segments and key sources of competitive advantage
• Education/UK Secondary School teaching experience
• Digital skills: the ability to work with technology teams to develop the digital part of propositions
• Editorial skills (copy editing and proofreading) and a strong eye for detail
You don’t need to have any prior experience in the secondary schools sector, although we do like to work with people who have a genuine interest in this sector.
