Editorial Assistant - Knopf Books for Young Readers
The Random House Children's Group is looking for an editorial assistant to join the team. This position assists the VP/Publisher of Knop Books for Young Readers/Random House with daily editorial activities, including proposal/manuscript screening and project follow-up. Provides administrative support and acts as a liaison between authors, illustrators, agents and different departments within the company. Keen interest in children’s books is a must. Previous experience in the field, either via internships or other work experience is a plus.
Additional Responsibilities Include:
• Provides daily administrative support for both the Associate Publisher, and Publisher. These include: communicating via email & phone, calendar management, filing and mailings, working across a variety of proprietary online systems, scheduling meetings and calls, and booking travel
• Logs, traffics and maintains files on incoming manuscripts through stages of publication
• Reads and evaluates manuscripts, writes reader reports, and suggests cuts or revisions to projects under contract
• Provides follow-up on the editing and production steps of assigned acquisition projects
• Prepares front matter, body text, copyright, and cover text; formats, and traffics books through all stages of production
• Sends manuscripts to production after checking for neatness, clarity of directions to printer/designer, and sequence of materials
• Performs administrative and clerical tasks such as typing correspondence, answering telephones, and maintaining files
• Assists with scheduling of titles, creating spreadsheets, and list planning
• Creates PowerPoint decks for presentations & proposals
• Interfaces with Library of Congress in the obtaining of CIP data and LC numbers
• Submits copyright notices
• Drafts P&Ls, contract proposals, flap, online and catalog copy, and Title Information sheets
• Runs sales figures
• Attends editorial meetings
• Conducts photo research and creates back matter, as necessary
• Monitors social media and websites for book and author ideas
• May proofread and copyedit subject to second look by supervising editor
• Provides intern training, as needed
• Performs other related projects or duties as assigned or required by division
Minimum requirements include:
• Four-year college degree or equivalent work experience
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize
• Ability to pay attention to detail
• Strong communication skill, both verbal & written
• Strong interpersonal skills, & ability to deal with difficult people
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
• Reading on your own time is necessary
• Computer skills – MS Word (particularly word processing), Excel and PowerPoint
