Thrillist means fun. We're eaters, drinkers, travelers, and doers. We serve the curious and believe that new experiences are what drive the richest lives. We bring our passion, expertise, and taste to bear on the things that are truly worth your time and money. Life is for living, and that’s why we’re here. Today will be great.
Thrillist is seeking a wildly creative, talented, experienced, and driven Senior Editor to lead Thrillist's local and cities coverage. Local service is central to everything we do -- we strive to have all the answers about where to eat, where to drink, and what to do. More often than not, this involves pizza in some way. We want to help you have more fun (and pizza) wherever you are. We want to understand what makes every city unique, and what people truly care about in those places, and then write fun, engaging, deeply reported stories that cut to the heart of what that place is all about. The ideal candidate has a passion for food, drink, and stories that illuminate why people love where they live.
Responsibilities:
• Lead a team of editors and freelance writers to produce engaging, tightly-reported, hunger-inducing, stories about where to eat, where to drink, and what to do in more than 30 cities across the USA
• Expertly manage your team’s time while ensuring everything is running smoothly and efficiently
• Ideate original, reported feature stories that cut to the heart of what is relevant to people's lives in cities across the country, and be able to inspire others to do the same
• Don’t just stop at your team! Come up with amazing ideas, constantly, across multiple teams including, and especially, the video team
• Be able to skillfully frame a local story for a national audience
• Edit with an extreme (like maybe even a little too extreme) eye for detail, and a specific emphasis on the most important parts of a story: the copy, the headline, the visuals, and the formatting
• Work directly with the Executive Editor to set the team's editorial strategies, and produce the most interesting and impactful stories possible
• Use reporting tools (such as Google Analytics, Chartbeat, and custom dashboards) to analyze traffic and SEO data to inform editorial strategy and decision making
Qualifications:
• 3-5 years experience writing and editing in digital media
• Experience coaching editors to work extremely well with freelancers
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage many projects and deadlines simultaneously
• A deep and passionate knowledge of the NYC eating and drinking scene that never even comes close to snobbery
• A strong editor who can work with other editors to make them better
• Possess exceptional communication, creative, and organizational skills
• Work well in a team, as well as on your own
• Work with editors and writers to pitch great stories, and turn good ideas into great ideas.
• Be able to juggle multiple projects at once
• Deep understanding of the Thrillist brand and lifestyle
• Openness to constructive criticism from peers and managers alike
• Extensive knowledge of SEO, and how to promote stories via email and social media
• Experience recruiting and managing a large stable of freelance writers
• A strong background in food and drink
• A mind that is creative, analytical, and flexible all at the same time
