Technical Accounting & Compliance Manager
The Technical Accounting & Compliance Department sits within the Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) Corporate Finance Group. The team is accountable for consulting and advising business units on a proactive basis on accounting issues and policies, internal controls, and corporate governance. In addition, the group serves as a liaison to the external auditors, Tax and Internal Audit and assists in preparation and retention of Financial Statement Information and disclosures in coordination with Sony Corporation of America (SCA), Sony Corporation and the business units within SPE. As a result, the Technical Accounting & Compliance Manager will have exposure to all of the financial departments within the company. The group also works with Legal and Business Development on various issues such as due diligence reviews.
The Manager will be accountable for assisting on providing technical accounting support on the implementation of new accounting standards, internal controls development, SPE’s Chart of Financial Authority approval guidelines, third party audit coordination and submissions to SCA and Sony Corp. The Manager will need to develop and maintain a detailed knowledge of company-wide operations that will enable transitioning to key positions in other finance areas or business units when, and if, necessary.
In addition, the Manager will work closely with the Vice President on special projects design to add value to the operations of the finance group and the overall business.
Responsibilities
• Support and educate employees on company-wide internal control compliance, including assisting business units with clarification of requirements and implementing controls and Policies to mitigate risk. Proactively provide insightful recommendations to business to improve internal control procedures and efficiency.
• Work with Corporate stakeholders to identify and plan compliance reviews of third party licensees, vendors, and participants by developing an understanding of the operation under review, assembling and reviewing contracts, tracking audit rights, identifying potential areas of risk, drafting and sending audit notification letters, preparing audit programs, analyzing audit documents, performing audit testing, and reporting on findings.
• Perform testing of company level controls in accordance with SOX 404 requirements.
• Support IFRS activities in coordination with Sony Corporation, SPE personnel, external auditors and statutory entities.
• Obtain and submit documents and certifications required by Sony Corporation and regulatory requirements.
• Work with business units to help them complete their Internal Audit Finding Management Action Plans, updating the Archer internal tracking system, assessing items for appropriateness of closure, and preparing status reports.
• Manage unclaimed property recoveries by gathering documents for class action lawsuits and searching government databases for escheated property.
• Work with other finance and operational personnel on integration of newly acquired operations into SPE operations and organization with a focus on accounting and finance issues.
• Provide support for special financial projects, such as the new lease accounting standard, as requested from various SPE divisions. Example activities include contract reviews, resolving technical accounting issues, coordinating with stakeholders, drafting white papers and updating SPE’s accounting policies.
Requirements
• BS/BA – Finance/Accounting, or Business degree
• CPA (or equivalent) is preferred
• 4+ years accounting work experience in an accounting firm or related industry
• Experience in accounting research and internal controls required
• Experience with IFRS is a plus
