Investigative Reporter/MMJ
The WNEM Newsperson (Investigative Reporter) researches, writes, reports, shoots video and edits investigative news material for television newscasts and all WNEM news platforms and initiatives, including digital and smart phones, some anchoring possible. The successful individual will furnish a wide variety of investigative news content either working alone or in tandem with other field personnel. This position coordinates with Content Center/Assignment Desk and team of multi- media producers. The Investigative Newsperson contributes live shots utilizing microwave, satellite and other technology for feeding stories to Content Center. The individual will be called upon to represent WNEM in public in a professional and courteous manner. The individual will be required to become fully immersed in computer assisted reported, database research, government documents and other complex sources of information. The individual must be highly detail oriented, resourceful, organized and maintain adhere to high standards for legal and ethical conduct. Other duties as assigned including general assignment reporting.
Essential Job Functions:
75% - Writes, reports, presents live from studio and in the field, shoots, edits investigative news stories from concept to finish; contributes copy stories to newscasts and digital platforms. Performs live reports on daily basis. Generates story ideas, cultivates news sources and remains knowledgeable regarding places, events and people in the news, local or national. Must understand and respect libel and defamation laws and standards. Other duties as assigned including general assignment reporting. 15% -Provides daily story notes outlining ideas for future stories and assisting others in the development of daily and investigative stories. Provides progress reports to managers on story development. Shares information relating to upcoming events, meetings or story developments. Presents stories via on air, live from the set, live remotes or live indoor locations.
10% - Provides daily story notes outlining ideas for future stories. Passes along facts uncovered concerning ongoing projects. Provides progress reports on story checks. Shares information relating to upcoming events, meetings or story developments. Presents stories via on air, live from the set, live remotes or live indoor locations.
10% -Serves as community ambassador for the news department. Responds to concerns of viewers. Makes personal appearances on behalf of the station. Attends station sponsored promotion events as scheduled.
Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements: All must be met to be considered.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, Communications or related field, or equivalent training and/or experience.
Experience:
At least five year's experience in broadcast journalism preferred with an emphasis on highly complex and promotable and/or experience. On-air experience in local TV preferred.
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must possess advanced understanding of legal and ethical issues impacting journalism, including libel, defamation and false light.
Ability to combine words and pictures into informative and promotable investigative news stories.
Advanced knowledge of the locale, governing bodies, demographics and public figures.
Ability to edit stories as necessary.
Ability to perform quality work in high pressure deadline situations.
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must possess valid Driver’s License.
