We are seeking a Director of Publicity to work within our General Books division. This position requires the management, strategic vision, and direction of all publicity efforts related to all books published by the Harper and Harper Wave imprints. It requires direct involvement in and responsibility for the publicity programs for our major authors. It also requires that the person have the capabilities necessary to fully represent the entirety of our publicity efforts to authors, agents and potential author acquisitions.
Responsibilities:
• Identify 6-8 key titles each season, determine budgets, and assign resources to execute publicity/media campaigns and author events. The primary responsibility will be for Harper Wave books in the health//narrative non-fiction sphere. Personally handle key authors/title campaigns each season to ensure success.
• Oversee the creation of press releases, pitch letters, promotional materials and arrangement of special events, conferences, etc.
• Develop and strengthen bookseller contacts and relationships with the marketplace/industry.
• Ensure strong relationships with existing authors and build relationships with potential future authors.
• Develop and maintain close working relationships with members of the press (broadcast, radio, print, online, blogs, trades, etc.)
• Attend division meetings and events, as well as have the opportunity to travel as part of author tours and conference participation.
• Attend author pitch meetings, strategy meetings and is an essential part of the Harper Wave team.
• Manage and develop the staff within the publicity department.
• Liaise with key departments like marketing, sales, and editorial to ensure a cohesive message is being made throughout marketing/publicity initiatives.
• Publicizes books and authors; schedules interviews with broadcast and print media. Experience on lifestyle/wellness books is a must.
• Books local and national publicity in broadcast and print media as well as bookstore tours; schedules author travel.
• Briefs authors on how to handle interviews; develops media contacts; accompanies authors on interviews.
• Writes press releases; pitches letters and other promotional materials relating to tours.
• Coordinates all publicity activities on assigned titles from the mailing of galleys to the development of proper angles and pitches; schedules and plans bookstore appearances and special events; coordinates publicity updates for division and sales force.
• Coordinates outreach to authors, publicity plans, budgets and publicist work assignments.
• Responsible for supervising one direct report.
• Schedules author travel.
Qualifications:
• At least 7 years of hands on book publicity experience, with increasing levels of responsibility for campaign and people management
• Extensive media contacts with strong relationships in health and wellness categories.
• Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, to meet tight deadlines with budgetary constraints and changing priorities (must be extremely flexible and versatile).
• Must be able to handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously.
• Superb written, verbal and interpersonal skills are essential as is an ability to speak and think clearly and creatively and generate new ideas on a regular basis.
• Must be an independent and strategic thinker who is a strong team player with top-notch internal communications skills.
