Introduction:
The Economist requires a Middle East Editor in its London office to commission, edit and write articles about the Middle East for The Economist, the world’s leading international newspaper.
Accountabilities:
The main responsibilities and function for the role include:
• Fulfilling the purpose outlined above on a daily/weekly basis for The Economist;
• writing and pitching leaders when called to do so;
• generating ideas for the website and data team;
• collaborating with our network of correspondents in the Middle East;
• managing the team of correspondents in the Middle East;
• traveling to and within the Middle East to keep abreast of all political and social matters there;
• contributing to online and multimedia coverage;
• taking part in the weekly editorial meetings and contributing regularly;
• chairing or partaking in Economist conferences about the Middle East; and
• contributing regularly to Economist Films, Economist Radio, Snapchat and Espresso.
Experience, skills and professional attributes:
Candidates must possess all of the following:
• A Master’s degree or equivalent;
• significant experience in editing and writing at a quality newspaper, with a proven track record of in-depth analysis, clear writing and wit;
• an exceptional in depth knowledge and understanding of the Middle East, US foreign policy and general international affairs;
• working knowledge of digital publishing systems including CCI and Drupal;
• outstanding written and spoken English;
• first rate writing and analytical skills;
• a talent for spotting stories and reporting with initiative and determination;
• competence and confidence in interviewing senior sources;
• excellent collaborative skills; and
• written and spoken Arabic language skills are preferred as this is likely to be the main source language for materials and interviews on which articles are based.
