The Application Developer will support our internal Research team consisting of Content Development, Publishing, and Psychometrics & Research Services departments. Located in our Chicago office, this position will report to the Manager of Psychometrics & Research Services.
Primary Responsibilities
• Assists in design, development, and implementation tasks related to the content management and exam/item publication using XML/XLST/QTI
• Must be willing to learn QTI and take direction/supervision from project leads
• Assist in the authoring of various types of software scripts to create/modify exam and item functionality and design
• Will develop applications/scripts to support on-going content development
• Assists in on-going research related to design and layout features for bespoke GUI for licensure/certification exams
• Must be skilled in code review evaluations and participate in QA testing to insure quality, maintainability & adherence to standards
• Function as trouble-shooter to investigate and correct program defects
• Must be able to work on timelines with the production of high-quality deliverables
• Identify methods to automate work flows and standardize content presentations
• May be asked to take on new application development assignments that fit into current systems and programs
• Provides end-user/customer support for non-technical project staff
• Ability to work on multiple projects
• Prepares and maintains documentation on all assigned tasks/activities as required by project lead and/or supervisor
• Responsible for some aspects of application support including analysis, documenting, and coding software application programs
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
• XML required; QTI preferred
• Intermediate level experience with XLST or other methods for transforming XML documents; if not at an intermediate level with XLST, but intermediate experience with other methodologies will be considered
• Experience with Content Management Systems is a plus
• Basic knowledge of relational database technology; Experience desired
• Some experience in SQL; SQL Query Analyzer preferred
• Knowledge of basic application programming principles and structures
• Experience with structured programming languages, e.g. Java, Visual Basic/C++, Python, JavaScript
• Ability to evaluate and learn proprietary software applications
• Knowledge of and experience with HTML; Experience with web development tools and frameworks desired
• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite products & various PC-based software applications
• Good analytical, organizational, follow-up and planning skills
• Able to creatively resolve issues and adapt readily to a changing R&D environment
• Good communications, writing, and editing skills needed to transfer information to individuals involved in the development
• Good with creative design and GUI layout
• Ability to work within a small team environment and take direction from project leaders
• Ability to be accountable for work products and timelines
• Detail oriented in order to provide QA reviews of content at all stages of development
Education:
• Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience in a discipline such as computer science, information systems, web design, game design, etc. that shows a core understanding of application programming, XML/HTML, and GUI design
Experience:
• Some experience with XML, XSLT, HTML, SQL, and at least one structured programming language, be prepared to present your work as part of the interviewing process
• Experience with QTI is preferred
• Experience with web development frameworks preferred
• Experience with content management systems is a plus
• Proficient in MS Office suite of products
