Producer, Politics - Spectrum News Austin
SUMMARY
The ideal candidate will work with news managers, political reporters and guest analysts to produce one half-hour weekly political news show, Capital Tonight, covering the Texas Legislature, state politics and news from Austin City Hall. The right candidate will also coordinate political coverage through the week, especially legislative coverage. The right person will help book guests, write scripts, cut and catalogue video for shows and for political stories for all Spectrum Austin newscasts.
Along with assisting political reporters, the Capital Tonight producer will help news staff gather content for daily news coverage.
Must work well on a deadline, strive for balanced, accurate news coverage, and work well with others.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
News Coverage
Duties include:
• Maintaining relevant contacts for newsgathering.
• Using news judgment to decide what stories to cover and how to present them.
• Reporting, shooting and editing video stories and packages for air.
• Insuring that all necessary elements on packages and live shots are delivered in a timely fashion.
• Evaluating resources needed for adequate coverage.
Editorial
Duties include:
• Conceiving stories to add to our programming.
• Writing and editing stories, teases, scripts, etc.
• Copy editing vos and vosots, reads scripts and reviews the final edited version of taped stories.
• Staying informed on current issues by reading newspapers, wires, today’s queue, monitoring wheel and reviewing packages.
• Editing VOS, SOT and packages.
• Reviewing content of stories and check for errors of fact, technical errors, creative content, miscues, editorial mistakes and all elements needed to deliver quality programming.
• Coordinating live shots
• Possibly line producing newscasts
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• 4 year college degree, preferably in journalism or related field. Must have prior television news experience.
• Solid news judgment, with knowledge of current local news and newsmakers a plus.
• Must be able to use and have knowledge of common television newsroom computer systems and software, with ability to learn new software systems.
