Description
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
• Conducts user research to gather requirements. This includes interviews, ethnographic observation, workflow analyses and contextual inquiry. Creates personas based on research.
• Transfers understanding of user needs and workflows to propose strategic enhancements to company products. Working with Product Management, distills this into a set of features that will benefit the user in the most effective way.
• Designs alternative solutions, evaluating them to choose the best approach. Visualizes and prototypes intended solutions. Meets and collaborates with users and development partners to validate conceptual designs.
• Assists in the coordination and facilitation of usability tests and other target user research with project partners to validate existing and future feature design (including prototype testing ranging from low-fidelity to high-fidelity).
• Composes story maps, technical, highly detailed artifacts using text, diagrams, illustrations, and/or prototypes to outline product, feature, and function specifications as required to best support the Agile Software Development Lifecycle.
• Delivers design communication artifacts for use by a wide range of audiences including Software Development, Test Development, Technical Publications, Sales and Marketing. Reviews feature implementation, test plans and documentation to ensure accuracy of desired application results.
• Facilitates presentations and discussions with users, developers, and product marketers to drive resolution on proposed features and functionality.
• Partners with development team to drive successful implementation of product design specifications. Resolves any implementation issues that affect the design.
• Maintains familiarity with other company products and competitive products to ensure compatibility with proposed feature sets.
• Collaborates with members of the product team(s) in the production of white papers, demonstration examples, and other technical collateral required for product introductions and ongoing marketing.
• Trains other internal company stakeholders on new workflows and functionality after appropriate scoping and development milestones are met.
Requirements
• 5+ years of professional interaction design and usability evaluation/research experience with multi-disciplinary design teams.
• Technical background and/or a demonstrable understanding of modern software development processes and concerns as they relate to design.
• Ability to develop interactive prototypes and documentation to aid evaluation and development of designs.
• Strong communications skills: written, verbal and visual.
• Fluent English language skills.
• Impeccable design sensitivity and aesthetic.
• Ability to solve complex problems and drive projects from concept through implementation.
• Highly adaptable with strong organizational skills.
• Fast learning
• Proactive; willing to take initiatives and risks.
Additional desired qualifications
• Experience with Mechanical CAD Modeling.
• Previous experience designing for complex creative, 3D, and/or engineering analysis applications.
• An advanced degree in an HCI-related subject.
• Expertise in modern software development processes and concepts (Agile) for user experience.
• Entrepreneurial spirit: experience with software start-up or UX Consulting Services firm.
• Demonstrable interest in the details and the results of the design process, not just the initial concept
• Ability to partner with user research to identify and fix usability issues from ethnographic observation. A solid understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
• Interact with and influence others effectively via teamwork and diplomacy.
• Excellent working knowledge of design software; Adobe Creative Suite/Creative Cloud, Balsamiq, Visio etc.
