Role
We are looking for a highly motivated, collaborative data scientist to join the Advanced Computing and Data Science Laboratory. The mission of the Lab is to develop and apply advanced computing and data science methods to improve the value of Pearson products, services and processes. This position provides the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge applied research to make a substantial contributions in improving learning and instruction at scale.
Responsibilities:
• Develop and evaluate text analytics, statistical models and computational algorithms to improve the value of Pearson products, services and processes.
• Design data collection approaches that capture relevant user behavior to enhance both content and overall learning experience.
• Communicate research and operational findings through appropriate methods that may include internal reports, journal papers, or executive summaries, and internal or external presentations.
• Work collaboratively with other members of the Lab and product partners to advance the goals of the Lab.
• Build functional proofs of concept.
Qualifications
Requirements:
◦ PhD in a quantitative field and a minimum of 5 years experience working in complex computing and analytic contexts (or equivalent experience).
◦ Experience with modern data mining techniques and technologies e.g. information retrieval, text analytics, machine learning, natural language processing, speech technologies, model design, visualization, probabilistic models.
◦ Interest in human cognition, teaching and learning. Experience with educational data is a plus.
◦ Deep understanding of statistics, probability and evaluation techniques.
◦ Profound knowledge of working with and analyzing data: data structures, data representation, data cleaning, data governance, and research database design.
◦ Strong collaborative skills including ability to clarify business problems, understand alternative points of view and contribute to cross-functional problem resolution.
◦ Exceptional ability and desire to solve problems pragmatically and to quickly learn new concepts and methodologies as needed.
◦ Excellent understanding of, experience with and demonstrated success in modern scientific research methods.
◦ Evidence of good communication skills, both presentations and publications.
