Clarkson Potter is seeking an Editorial Director to oversee the culinary list. Renown for editorial, design, and production excellence, Potter is a top publisher of illustrated lifestyle books and gift products with a reputation as a leading cookbook imprint. Our authors range from icons, such as Ina Garten and Martha Stewart, to new cooking superstars, including Chrissy Teigen and Gina Homolka; from brand partners, such as Shake Shack and MasterChef Junior, to award winners like Ronni Lundy, who recently won double James Beard Awards for Victuals: An Appalachian Journey, with Recipes.
The culinary Editorial Director will work closely with the VP & Associate Publisher to develop a unified cookbook program and publishing strategy that will inform both the short-term seasonal publishing lists and long-term overall imprint objectives. The Editorial Director will provide leadership and day-to-day management. Responsibilities include the following: discussing submissions with editors and evaluating them for possible acquisition; reviewing p&ls and directing negotiating strategy; reviewing marketing copy and ads; directing internal sales materials to position each title uniquely; and acquiring 8 to10 books annually for his or her own list.
Clarkson Potter prides itself on our highly collaborative culture and workflow. It is essential for the candidate to feel comfortable—and genuinely enjoy—working in concert with the art and production departments and the marketing, publicity, and sales teams.
Candidate must have 10 years of editorial work experience, including management experience, and a thorough knowledge of the publishing process and illustrated bookmaking. Equally important is creative initiative and tenacity in pursuing projects and ideas as well as a spirit of partnership and generosity in sharing those ideas. Established contacts with agents and authors and strong negotiation skills are essential.
