Role Summary/Purpose:
Assistant News director is responsible for the overall performance of the news department and any other local productions across multiple media platforms. Candidate must be able to support and carry out the vision and strategy in a competitive market, with the focus on improving our staff, viewer content, presentation and performance.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
• Provides leadership and drives strategy for News and Content professionals, driving culture of creativity and excellence in a multi-platform environment.
• Ensure local newscasts are well conceived and provide multi-platform, high quality coverage, accuracy, and integrity to improve competitive position in the market
• Execute strategy for continued growth for news and information on the Web and mobile applications.
• This individual will work closely with the VP of News, Sales, Creative Services, Programming and other Content departments to further multi-platform opportunities in multiple stations and support Telemundo branding and programming initiatives.
• Creates the cohesive standards for all aspects of the on-air presentation of content for all shows, in coordination with the brand.
• Manages and develops news and content personnel. Helps make hiring decisions with VP of new and HR. Establishes performance goals and guidelines. Oversees the evaluation and performance appraisal process across the content organization. Coaches and develops staff to work and grow in a multiplatform environment. Drives culture of creativity, excellence and performance. Enthusiastically promotes management initiatives.
• Develop and maintain a working relationship with the research director to analyze performance and identify trends.
• Will manage the quality of all newsgathering, production, news programming and presentation.
• Ensure newscasts are well conceived and provide high quality coverage, accuracy, integrity and result in an improved competitive position in the market.
• Oversee day-to-day coverage, big story, breaking news and sweeps planning with consideration of payroll, staffing, field, and news operations to meet established goals and objectives.
• Achieve highest standard of integrity in news operations.
• Will report to the VP of News
Qualifications/Requirements
• Undergraduate degree in Journalism, Communications or equivalent work experience
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the following areas: as an Assistant News Director, or similar leadership role at a broadcast station in a mid to large market
• Experience preparing and presenting in front of large audiences
• Experience and success in coaching, leading and motivating a team of employees
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience in content creation for news and information website
*Ability to think “out of the box” and outside of traditional journalistic and News norms regarding use of technology, revenue generation, customer integration and multi-platform approaches for Local Media
