SUMMARY
Coordinate news crews, resources and logistics during assigned shift
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Ability to extensively plan future events, including technical set up, credentialing personnel, tracking upcoming local and national coverage as well as follow up events.
• Assigns news coverage/handles logistics of deploying news crews in a timely manner.
• Ensures continuous communication with assignment editors to maintain continuity with other shifts. Also coordinates coverage with producers and field crews.
• Gathers and researches story ideas through beat calls, wire services, newspapers, magazines, web sites and radio and television news.
• Develop Sources within the community
• Make Beat calls to sources and other agencies
• Gather accurate information from the public and public agencies
• Monitor Police Scanners.
• Maintains thorough knowledge of issues, events and newsmakers in the region, state and world.
• Maintains database of news sources and contacts.
• Maintains current and future files for news stories.
• Demonstrates news judgment in selecting and or recommending stories.
• Decides and assigns priority to news stories, assigns crews and coverage accordingly.
• Maintains systems that track equipment and vehicles assigned to reporters, photographers and other news staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) from a four year college or university in English, Journalism or Communications Preferred.
• Previous experience in a news environment with four years or more of assignment desk experience preferred.
• Communication: excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; ability to clearly communicate solutions; and able to relate well with diverse populations.
• Interpersonal: ability to interface with internal company personnel.
• Behavior: requires adaptability, enthusiasm, initiative and a positive approach to problem solving. Must enjoy working with people.
• Prior experience dealing with the public.
• Must have strong research and organizational skills.
• Experience using public data systems preferred.
• Experience in planning and scheduling preferred.
• Ability to develop contacts with area agencies and businesses.
• Must have strong writing skills.
• Must be able to work under time pressure deadlines and willing and able to work different shifts or longer shifts due to "breaking news" and severe weather emergencies. Willing and able to work weekends and holidays
WORKING CONDITIONS
• Works inside a climate controlled environment throughout the year.
• Sits for long periods of time.
• Requires long periods of personal computer use and telephone communications.
• Works in an open newsroom setting with a semi-noisy environment.
• Communicates in person, by phone and by email.
• Must be able to work under time pressure deadlines and willing and able to work different shifts or longer shifts due to "breaking news" and severe weather emergencies. Willing and able to work weekends and holidays.
• Materials and equipment used: various studio and newsgathering television equipment, computers and computer-related equipment.
• May be required to lift up to 5 pounds.
• Must be able to distinguish colors and discern sounds.
