The Los Angeles Times Events team produces over 90 market-leading events annually. Projects include the largest literary and arts festival in the US or Canada, Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, nationally-recognized culinary events like Los Angeles Times The Taste and Jonathan Gold’s Bite Nite, the half-day conference format Los Angeles Times Summits, the thought-leadership Ideas Exchange series and dozens of screening and Q & A events featuring major talent from Oscar-caliber films to independent films. The Times’ events roster is the largest and most diverse of any news-based organization in the country.
The Associate Director of Events, Production will oversee the strategy, marketing planning, execution and design of Los Angeles Times Events, through both direct project management and oversite of a small team of producers. The person in this role will be ultimately responsible for maintaining the standard of excellence, innovation and accountability established to date by the efforts of all present and past team, and will be a vital part of ensuring that Los Angeles Times Events projects manifest themselves in a manner that is industry-leading.
Responsibilities:
• Serve as direct project manager for at least 1/3 of all Los Angeles Times events, specifically including direct project management for Los Angeles Times The Taste, including total management of profit and loss, hiring of vendors, contracts, permits and permissions with city agencies, risk management, eventual general on-site execution and sponsor execution, and sponsor recap process
• Oversee the general direction of marketing strategy for all projects directly managed, including best-practices use of real-time data to assess effectiveness of marketing methods, and adjusting current and future marketing methods accordingly
• Through supervision of 3 direct reports, provide oversight for the remaining portion of Los Angeles Times events, ensuring that they are produced with the expected standard of excellence
• Oversee the general trajectory, direction and tone of Los Angeles Times events, ensuring a consistency of experience by partners and sponsors and standard of quality, while still ensuring individual projects have a distinct personality
• Provide general support for the Director of Events and VP of Events and work with VP and Director to help craft the general vision and direction of the department
• Work collaboratively with members of the Los Angeles Times Advertising team to ensure maximum sponsor opportunities and satisfaction, with the Los Angeles Times Editorial team to place The Times’ editorial staff in the best light possible within our events, and with the Los Angeles Times Marketing team to ensure that events meet marketing objectives
Qualifications:
• Demonstrated excellence in major event production, including events with budgets exceeding $500,000
• Significant experience with developing and integrating sponsor/donor needs and execution into major events
• Demonstrated experience with managing the profit and loss statement for major events
• Minimum 5 years experience producing events for a major recognized brand preferred
• College degree preferred
• Knowledge of and familiarity with event technology platforms, data integration and marketing analytics strongly preferred
• Ability in the area of computer aided design (CAD drawings, 3d renderings) considered a major plus
• Demonstrated management and leadership abilities, with experience with managing at least two direct reports
• Big-picture and team-oriented thinker who can serve as an asset to VP and Director in creating the overall vision and strategy of the Los Angeles Times Events portfolio
• Ability to constantly bring new ideas and methods of approach to the department
• Very strong design and aesthetic sensibilities
• Strong ability to consider and deliver favorably in the area of guest flow and convenience
• Positive and solution-oriented attitude consistent with a leadership role in the department
