Position Summary
The Qualification Department (QD) is a core function of Pearson Qualification Services (PQS). QD leads on the design, development and accreditation of Pearson qualifications, including GCE and GCSE, BTEC, work-based learning and international qualifications.
QD is committed to producing high-quality, error-free, customer-friendly materials, the role of Senior Project Editor is key to helping us meet this commitment. The overall objective of the role is to ensure that QD materials meet editorial quality standards, for example that they are audience appropriate, meet customer need, are free of grammatical and other language-related errors.
The Senior Project Editor will manage a range of qualification-related projects, working with a high level of autonomy. They will take responsibility for ensuring that projects are of high quality and that they are delivered on time and to budget. The post holder will provide an editorial lead on complex projects.
A major part of the role is to commission and contract freelance editors and proofreaders. The post holder will ensure that freelancers are fully briefed, coordinating their workload, quality checking their work and giving them constructive feedback. The role requires liaison with key members of the development teams and with colleagues and stakeholders across the business.
Key Role-specific Deliverables
Editorial
• Copy-edit and proofread qualification materials to quality and deadline, meeting customer expectations.
• Keep up to date with changes and developments in house style and with changes to the English language.
• Put checks in place to ensure quality of content.
• Explain editorial decisions to developers and others whose work has been edited.
• Give advice and guidance on editorial issues.
Freelance editor management
• Identify and select appropriate freelance editors for each job, produce clear briefs, give appropriate support and constructive feedback.
• Recruit new freelance editors and develop existing contacts.
• Manage contracting and payment of freelance editors.
• Identify and achieve cost savings where possible.
Leadership
• Take an editorial lead on complex projects.
• Take the lead when working with freelance editors.
Communication, liaison and scheduling
• Liaise and negotiate with stakeholders to establish realistic and achievable deadlines.
• Work collaboratively, and communicate proactively and appropriately with members of the project and development teams.
• Work with developers and other key stakeholders to schedule and coordinate editorial resources to meet editorial and publishing deadlines.
• Produce editorial schedules.
• Find creative ways of keeping schedules on track.
• Ensure that projects are delivered on time and to quality, resolving any problems at an
early stage.
• Prepare management information reports.
Quality
• Strive for continuous improvement in editorial quality.
• Work with the Editorial Manager and the Quality Assurance and Control Manager in developing editorial quality criteria and processes.
• Carry out editorial induction training for new members of QD.
• Contribute to raising the level of editorial skill and accuracy in QD by working with the Editorial Manager in planning and implementing editorial training sessions.

Qualifications
Previous Work Experience
Essential
• Significant previous experience in an editorial role or equivalent.
• Able to use industry standard copy-editing and proofreading conventions.
• Used to working under pressure and to deadline.
• Able to work as part of a team and individually.
• Confident and effective dealing with people at all levels.
• Able to plan, organise and prioritise.
Desirable
• Experience of working in an educational environment, familiar with educational terminology.
• Experience of delivering training and briefing others.
Systems, Tools & IT Literacy
Essential
• Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite.
• Able to edit onscreen using Word track changes and other similar applications.
Desirable
• Knowledge of styles and document layout.
• Knowledge of XML.
Education, Qualifications & Training
Essential
• Proven excellent command of the English language.
• Degree or relevant vocational qualification, or extensive experience in a relevant discipline.
Desirable
Editorial training from a leading publishing training provider
Please note, this role is initially for a 6 month contract with the aim of going permanent.
