JOB SUMMARY:
The Dual Language Captioning Intern is responsible for quality English to Spanish (LAS) translation and (LAS) transcription for closed captioning or subtitling video media such as features, series, and shorts as well as other departmental needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Transcribe programming to create LAS or English files by listening through headphones while viewing video programming.
• Be familiar with all FCC rules and regulations, and alert CC Manager to any titles that may arise in the CC workflow that may be out of compliance.
• Proofread scripts, PDF’s, word documents and transfer hard copy files to digital format.
• Review newly created Spanish files from third party vendors for accuracy
• Time and place captions on screen to appear appropriately with audio and video changes within program, taking scene changes into consideration.
• Work directly with Closed Captioning Manager to prioritize projects.
• Research Internet and other sources for correct spellings, terms, and information to ensure accuracy when creating closed captioning.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Pursuing a degree in English, Journalism, or related field.
• Must be fluent in Spanish and English, verbal and written.
• Skilled in sustained concentration on audio tracks of media, with the ability to decipher subtle sound cues from recorded programs; training in transcription, captioning and subtitles.
• Must have excellent typing skills.
• Must have excellent research skills with the ability to research spellings of uncommon words, places, events, and names in English and Latin American Spanish.
• Must be deadline driven and able work in a fast paced environment.
• Ability to use problem-solving and decision-making skills to exercise initiative.
• Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
• Ability to understand captioning technologies and trends.
• Knowledge of computer systems (PC and Mac) and applications. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Power Point. Knowledge of organizational policies, procedures, and office management techniques.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Previous editing and/or proofreading experience preferred.
• Previous closed captioning experience preferred; experience with Softel Captioning systems preferred.
